Fudan Actively Participates in Studies of Global Carbon Emissions

The UK Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the world's leading academic institutions in the environmental field, and Fudan University released on December 4 a joint report claiming that "global carbon emissions has reached 100 tons, which is increasingly threatening the predicted 2 red line".

The report published in the 4th issue of NatureClimate Change. Experts said that global carbon dioxide emissions led by fossil fuel combustion has increased by 49% in the past 20 years. During the period from 2000 to 2010, carbon dioxide released by fossil fuels increase at an average annual rate of 3.1%, and with expectation of 3.1% growth rate in 2011.

According to the report, China, the United States, India, Russia and the EU contribute most to carbon emissions in 2010. By the emerging economies to provide products and services through trade spending by the Western countries, the share of resulting carbon emissions in some rich countries increase from 2.5% in 1990 to 16% in 2010.

Professor Zhao Bin believed that the joint research conducted by China and UK will change the angle of approach. Chinese scientists are now the international research upon global carbon emissions.

Fudan Scientist Finds New Mechanism on the Formulation of Symptoms Caused by Kicking Drug Addiction

Funded by National Basic Research Program (973 Program) which is implemented by the China Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation Group Project which is implemented by the China Natural Science Foundation, the research team led by Professor Zheng Ping from the Key Laboratory of Medical Neurology, Shanghai Medical College, after three years of efforts, found that the pain caused by kicking drug addiction connects closely with the dopamine system in the amygdale region of brain. According to the outcome of the research, the intervention of dopamine system in amygdale region of brain has a positive significance on reducing the environment-related relapses of drug addiction. The research result has been published on an international famous journal named The Journal of Neuroscience.

Drug addiction is a public health issue of global prevalence as well as a serious social problem. Practice proves that drug addict, even though having been detoxified, will relentlessly pursuit drug for both the pleasure the addictive drug brings and the unbearable pain which is hard to be eradicated after detoxification. Associative memory appears when the pleasure and pain caused by addictive drug meet the clues in environment and thus the drug addict urges to find and use drug again. For quite a long period, in which neural mechanism the symptoms of pleasure and pain of drug addict couple the clues in environment has been a difficult problem in need of solution.

In order to solve this problem, Professor Zheng Ping and his graduate students used drug addicted rat as their object of observation. They adopted the technique of drug intervention to intervene Dopamine D Acceptor in the amygdale region of brain of the drug addicted rat and removed its memory of the suffering after detoxification. When being put into the same environment, the rat didnt escape anymore after the intervention. Based on above mentioned phenomenon, Professor Zheng Pings research team lucubrated the change in the Dopamine D Acceptor in the amygdale region of brain of the drug addicted rat and found that Dopamine D acceptor, under the influence of morphine, can stimulate rather than inhibit the bioactive molecule Glutamic Acid. Morphine activates the signal transduction of Dopamine D Acceptor which is originally silent and inverts Dopamines effect on Glutamic Acid. Intervening dopamine system in the amygdale region of brain can cut the pain after detoxification from the clues of environment. For this important discovery, the relapse rate of environment-related drug addiction is expected to be decreased.
