International Symposium “Chronic Kidney Disease— Today’s Hot Topic” and the 7th Forum of Fudan University Nephrology Research Institute Successfully Held by Huashan Hospital
International Symposium “Chronic Kidney Disease— Today’s Hot Topic” and the 7th Forum of Fudan University Nephrology Research Institute was successfully held in Huashan Hospital from June 29 to 30, 2011, supported by Huashan Hospital Nephrology Department, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nephrology department, and ISN. More than 100 scholars in fields of clinical and theoretical studies attended the symposium.
The symposium this year was the 4th cooperation between Huashan Hospital Nephrology Department and Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nephrology Department since they became sister institutes. Director of Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nephrology Department, Prof. Raymond Harris and Prof. Gerald Schulman had deeper discussions with Fudan nephrology team led by Prof. Hao Chuanming and Prof. Gu Yong in various fields, such as clinical therapy, basic theoretical studies and curriculum building, exploring possibilities of further cooperation.
During the symposium in Shanghai Hotel, two foreign experts, together with Prof. LIN Shantan, shared with experts from China and abroad information concerning the latest development in research of causes and the treatment of the complication of chronic kidney disease in a more advanced level. The symposium this year created a high-level stage on which the attendees benefited greatly.
Seminar “Future Cultural Development and Construction of Soft Power in China” Held at Fudan
On Jun. 30, Fudan University Research Center for State Development held first phase of academic salon themed in “Future Cultural Development and Construction of Soft Power in China”. The salon was hosted by Social Science Innovation Base of News and Media of Fudan University and chaired by Professor Meng Jian from School of Journalism.
Professor Kuai Dashen from Shanghai Academy of Social Science pointed out that China needs focus on construction of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics. Professor Kuai demonstrated that the most important is not the power of spread but the content of “cultural soft power” with the example of cultural cohesion of Yan’an in 1940s. Cultural soft power reflected in the way of life, imitation and identity of value systems.
Professor Wu Xinbo from Fudan University School of International Relations and Public Affairs discussed how Chinese cultural soft power plays a role from the prospective of international relations. He proposed that the construction needs to solve three major issues: subjectivity, progressiveness and universality of culture.
Professor Hu Huilin from Shanghai Jiaotong University remarked that the fundamental interests of the country and the nation are the fundamental cohesion of national cultural development. He proposed that the premise of Chinese cultural development is to figure out basic and principal contradictions of national development. He also pointed out that “Culture of civil rights” is the ground and direction to build our “Soft Power” and we should focus on protection of the rights of civic culture.
Professor Shan Shilian from Shanghai Jiaotong University mentioned that to pay more attention to cultural soft power, we should pay more attention to national dignity, national value and spiritual construction. We not only need to attach importance to cultural diversity, but also to oppose decadent culture. Professor Shan proposed that development of culture should base on dignity of life, freedom and equality to develop diversity in culture.
Professor Liu Yi from Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Fudan University proposed that the core issues to build cultural soft power are the construction of value system, cultural awareness and rehabilitation. Professor Liu pointed out the construction of soft power should match the spirit of the times and consistent practice of social development and focus on legal protection.
Professor Tong Bing from School of Journalism, Fudan University contended that some issues need to be examined during the Chinese future culture development. First, with regards to the formation and mechanism of the culture, he outlined three main sources including ancient history, foreign experience and peoples’ practice. Second, as for the function of culture, he pointed out that culture not only works for the elite population but also for the people with different cultural levels and we should consider the mainstream values and coordination. Third, about the mechanisms of cultural development, we shouldn’t rely too much on our government. Forth, in respect of the protection of culture, we should strengthen the legislation of cultural filed. Professor Tong stressed that emancipation of the mind is the key point to develop Chinese culture.
Professor Ren Yuan from School of Social Development and Public Policy, Fudan University proposed three cultural development concepts. First, cultural development serves economical development. Second, culture development is a major part of national development. Third, culture development functions as mechanisms and tools of national governance. We need to study how cultural development constitutes effective governance mechanisms in the next decade. To Professor Ren’s points, three questions are crucial: First, to establish the core value of national development; Second, to sum the progress of Chinese soft power construction, explore the subjectivity of the path of Chinese development; Third, to promote Chinese future development through the creation of culture and attachment of importance on public opinion.

The Academic Salon on “China’s International Relations and the Peaceful Rise in the Next Decade” Held at Fudan
On the morning of July 5, 2011, the academic salon on “China’s International Relations and the Peaceful Rise in the Next Decade” was held at Fudan University Center for American Studies. The salon was initiated by Fudan Institute of Development and Research Center for State Development, and hosted by the Institute for International Studies (hereinafter referred to as IIS).
Chaired by Prof. Shen Dingli, Executive Vice-President of IIS, the salon invited Prof. Ren Yuan, Administrative Deputy Director of Research Center for State Development, and more than twenty scholars from the Institute of International Relations and Public Affairs, School of Economics and IIS.
As for the first topic “China’s Surrounding Environment and Diplomacy in the Next Decade”, Prof. Shi Yuanhua from Center for Korean Studies held that, although there are various problems and challenges in our surroundings, we still enjoy many favorable factors. The key is to properly handle the five most urgent issues: the solution to problems in growth, the breakthrough in the development bottleneck, the adjustment in mutual-cognition, the coordination of hard and soft power, and the overall arrangement of the domestic and the surrouding environment. Dr. Qi Huaigao from Center for UN and International Organizations Studies puts forward the four new challenges which China’s surrounding environment is faced with, namely, the challenges of the United States’return to the Asia, the disputes in territory and territorial waters, the appearance of major emergency, and the integration of regional multilateral system.
With regard to the second topic “China’s Relations with Leading Powers in the Next Decade”, Liu Yongtao, Associate Professor from Center for American Studies, proposed the five possible patterns of Asian-pacific region in the next decade, that is, the bipolar pattern, the hegemonic pattern, the pattern of balanced powers, and the pattern of China-US strategic alliance. Then he gave relevant analysis of the China-US security political relations in different patterns. Prof. Ding Chun, Director of Center for European Studies, presented a prediction and outlook about the EU’s development and China-EU relations in the next decade. Prof. Guo Dingping, Deputy Dean of IIS and Director of Center for Japanese Studies, argued that there will be no major changes in Sino-Japanese relations for the next ten years while uncertain factors that may intensify contradictions still exist. Prof. Du Youkang, Director of Center for South Asian Studies, believed that the Sino-Indian relations in the next decade will be “no better” due to border conflict, lack of mutual trust and a wide range of competitions. However, he held that the Sino-Indian relations will be “no worse” because of the consensus in many respects, such as trade relations, the global multi-polar trend, and climate issue.
Concerning the third topic “China’s Multi-lateral Diplomacy in the Next Decade”, Prof. Zhang Guihong, Deputy Dean of IIS and Director of Center for UN and International Organizations Studies, put forward five dimensions of China’s multi-lateral diplomacy over the next decade, namely the relationship between the one and the many, the new and the old, the south and the north, the strong and the weak, and the primary and the secondary. Prof. Chen Zhimin from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, proposed that the strategic planning of China’s multi-lateral diplomacy in the next decade should concentrate on the following aspects: system maintenance, system balance, system reform and system efficiency.
With respect to the fourth topic “ The Main Challenges of China’s Peaceful Rise in the Next Decade”, Zhang Yangwu from Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a detailed analysis of both domestic and international situations that China will be faced with in the next decade. Professor Shen Dingli, Administrative Dean of IIS and Director of Center for American Studies, maintained that China needs to handle properly domestic issues.
The First "Asian Art, Religion and Historical Research" Summer Seminar Successfully Held
The first "Asian Art, Religion and Historical Research" Summer Seminar which was co-hosted by Fudan University Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies and Princeton University Department of East Asian Studies was held from June 22 to July 2, 2011.The participants are 14 graduate students from Fudan University and 8 doctoral candidate from Princeton University, Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of California at Berkeley, and McGill University, Canada.
The seminar included different discussion sessions. Presentations included Prof. Ge Zhao-guang’s " Response to the Catholic Church in East Asia in Early 19th Century ", Prof. Tao Fei-ya’s "History of Christianity in China"; Prof. Zhou Zhen-he’s "The Language of the Late Qing Dynasty History of Contact and Cultural Exchange" and Prof. Elman’s " History of East Asia’s Publication and Culture ".The organizers hope to put the comprehensive discussions of Chinese studies in the Asian context in connection with surrounding country’s history, culture and arts, in a hope to converge studies of different countries. Meanwhile, we should not narrow their scope of study no matter it is ancient or contemporary Asia, religious history, art history or cultural history.
The other major feature of the workshop was to leave enough time for the participants to discuss and exchange their ideas. The participants were all positive and active. They put forward quite a few new issues upon cultural communication between China and western courtiers. All the participants benefited from the seminar and established profound friendship.
In addition, the Seminar also organized three-day activities: visits to Xujiahui Collection House, Xu Guangqi Memorial, Tsuchiyama Bay Museum, the Catholic Church, Jiading Confucian Temple, Qiu-Xia Pu, the ancient Yi Park, the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Library, Shanghai Art Museum, so that participants can feel the charm of cultural integration between East and West, have their horizons broadened.
The Summer Seminar also obtained strong support from Fudan University Graduate School.
Commencement Ceremony Held for Fudan University and University College Dublin BSc Degree in Computer Science Program
On the afternoon of June 30th, Commencement Ceremony for 2011 Fudan University and University College Dublin BSc Degree in Computer Science was held in Room 102, Sub-east Wing, Guanghua Tower, Handan Campus.
Vice President of Fudan University Prof. JIN Li, Leader of UCD Mr. Dunnion, Consul-general of Ireland to Shanghai Mr. Conor O'Riordan, Director of Foreign Affairs Office Mr. ZHU Chowwen, Dean of Fudan University School of Software Prof. Zang Binyu and other representatives from of UCD attended the ceremony.
Leaders from both universities presented the degree certificates to the students.
The BSc Degree in Computer Science Program was established in Sept., 2002, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year. Leaders from both universities highly recognize the fruitful result of the cooperation, hoping that the program will have a brighter future.
“International Symposium on Lessons and Convergence in Tort Law” Held at Fudan
August 16 to 17, “International Symposium on Lessons and Convergence in Tort Law” was held at Fudan University Center for American Studies. The symposium, jointly held by China Law Association, Fudan University and Remin University, aims to discuss lessons and convergence in the field of Tort Law among different countries, areas and legal systems, as well as the possibility to establish common rules that can be applicable to Tort Laws in the world. More than 50 scholars and specialists from U.S., U.K., Australia, Japan, Austria, Korea and China attended the symposium.
During the symposium, six sessions discussed respectively various aspects in the development of Tort Law. It was also announced that Symposium of Tort Law in East Asia would be held in Korea, and Forum of International Civil Law would be held in Fujian Normal University in China.
Fudan Co-organized the International Symposium on “The Future of Public Housing”
From Aug 22 to 23, an international symposium on “The Future of Public Housing”, organized by the Department of Public and Social Administration in City University of Hong Kong and the Centre for Housing Studies of Fudan University, was held in City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Fudan Professor Chen Jie, Director of Fudan Centre for Housing Studies, was invited to attend the symposium and give a speech titled “Shanghai Public House Construction and Reform of Housing Provident Fund”
The symposium brought together 13 policy makers and academics from China Mainland, Hong Kong, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, Vietnam, the Czech Republic and Brazil across a spectrum of economic and social development and with a variety of types of public housing provision. It successfully provided a forum for a discussion of different experiences of public housing development, an evaluation of privatization and post-privatization policies and a contextualized debate on the possible futures for public housing. It is confirmed at the end of session that Fudan University will host the symposium of next year.

The Training Courses of American College of Cardiology Given in Huashan Hospital
The Training Courses of American College of Cardiology, jointly initiated by Huashan Hospital Department of Cardiology, Chinese American Heart Association and Huashan Hospital Office of Training, was given at Huashan Hospital on July 3. Associate Professor QI Weilin, Associate Professor SHAN Ying and Associate Professor ZHU Jun from Huashan Department of Cardiology respectively gave presentations with regards to the latest clinical research and treatment in Interventional Cardiology, Heart Failure and Hypertension and Coronary Heart Diseases. Professor SHEN Weifeng from Ruijin Hospital presented a lecture about the latest progress in research of medical complications brought about by PCI surgery.
As a big-scale Sino-American academic exchange project, the training program was authorized by American College of Cardiology, aiming to update clinical theory and technology in Chinese cardiology in the backdrop of rapid progress in medicine. The training held in July is the Spring term of two regular ones, Spring and Autumn. Compared with the courses offered in last Autumn, those in this Spring term were greatly updated. It thus attracted many doctors, and enhanced the international influence of Huashan Hospital.

Fudan Global Health Summer School 2011 Successfully Completed
Fudan Global Health Summer School program “Achieving MDGs for Global Health” was held from July 10 to 16 at Fudan.
The summer school program this year was financially supported by China Medical Board (CMB Grant No. 10-028) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center (NIH/FIC GrantNo. R25TW008118), co-held by School of Public Health, Fudan University.
The program focused on the introduction of MDGs (Millennium Development Goals initiated by UN), helping students to learn more about Global Health, master the supervision skills over the provinces and keep an eye on the development, strategic plan and experience of the process of realizing MDGs. 25 registered students, most of whom are master degree students, are from 16 CMB membership institutes of higher education in China, Korea, Bangladesh and Mauritius.
Professors, researchers, and officers from Fudan University, Shanghai Institute of Planned Parenthood Research and UNICEF talked about the history, current situation, and multi-purposed technique plan of MDGs. Through case studies, students’group work and discussions, lecturers encouraged the communications between students and teachers.
The summer school program was highly welcomed by the students. Everyone agreed that it was a great stage for young scholars to communicate. Hopefully, the program will enhance the interactions and cooperation among the institutes of higher education in future.
Injured Belarus Athlete Treated Timely by Huashan Hospital
On July 22nd, a Belarusian athlete was injured after he fell from the 10-meter diving platform and hit his head while preparing for the men’s 10-meter synchronized diving at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. Medical staff, mainly from Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, who were waiting at the athletes medical station quickly rushed around the athlete and found that the his head had a 10-cm wound. Skilled medical staff immediately carried out on-site first-aid treatment in less than 10 minutes and immediately sent the injured to Huashan Hospital.
Test results showed that there was no internal injury in addition to head trauma. Doctors stitched wounds and suggested that he continue to stay in hospital for inspection until wound treatment was completed. The whole process lasted less than 2 hours. After treatment, the hospital helped athletes and coaches contact their insurance companies. They made arrangements to make foreign guests live in the ward for further observation. During the process, medical staff soothed the athletes through Russian interpreter to release them from restlessness. Huashan Hospital showed exceptional professional quality during the process.
As a designated hospital for Shanghai World Swimming Championship, Huashan Hospital treated over 30 injured or sick athletes, coaches or officials from 22 countries, including the chairman of FINA. A Mexican athlete who hit his feet and got 0 point in the final on July 10th also received meticulous treatment by Huashan Hospital. Later the athlete expressed his sincere gratitude to Huashan Hospital through the organization committee and Shanghai Health Bureau.
Huashan Hospital has ever provided health care in Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and 2010 World EXPO and has accumulated plenty of experience. Huashan Hospital was always providing the best health care to those foreign guests that come to Shanghai to attend big events.
Journalists from Chinese Universities Visited Korea
Led by Mr. Zheng Shuiquan from Renmin University of China (RUC) and Mr. Xiao Sijian from Fudan University, a delegation of 28 people from Chinese university journals visited Korea at the invitation of Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) from Aug 9 to 17. This was the third time for journalists from Chinese universities to be invited by KOFICE and the delegation this year was the biggest one, including participants from Peking , Tsinghua, RUC, Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong and Tongji.
During the visit, the Chinese delegation received high attention and warm welcome not only from Korean hosts but Korean media as well. They attended a debate session with students majoring in Chinese Literature from Ewha Womans University with regards to the roles of youth in furthering Sino-Korean friendship. They also attended Incheon Korean Wave Festival to make Korean traditional food including Kimchi. The interviews at various Seoul streets by Chinese journalists were carried out on the topics ranged from Korean traditional culture protection to universities’ role in city culture integration. In short, Chinese participants experienced Korean culture and deepened their understanding of Korea.

Visit by President of Duke University
A Duke University delegation led by President Richard Brodhead visited Fudan on July 1 and received a warmly welcome byFudan President Yang Yuliang. Prof. PengXizhe, Dean of School of Social Development and Public Policy, Dr. Qian XU, Vice Dean of School of Public Health, Dr. Hu Yan from the School of Nursing, Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Executive Director from Fudan Foreign Affairs Office, and Prof. Jin Yan from History Department were at present at the meeting.
Both of the universities expressed their great interests and had a discussion on general education. During the meeting, professors of two sides also reviewed the educational collaboration on global health, history and other fields between Fudan and Duke.
In recent years, Fudan and Duke have been building a close relationship, finding common interests and expertise, and exploring opportunities for cooperation. The two universities signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop faculty and student exchanges and research collaborations between the two schools.
On July 1 and 2, Mr. Michael Mesonmet, Director of the Duke Global Health Institute and Interim Vice President of Duke University, had further discussions with Fudan faculty and administrators, particularly those from the Global Health Center in the Fudan School of Public Healthon.
Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina, United States. According to U.S. News and World Report, the undergraduate education in Duke ranked 8th in the United States and 13th in the world in 2007. Moreover, Duke University has been ranked in the 5th place for 5 consecutive years. Duke offers 36 arts and sciences majors and 46 secondary majors.
