Prof. Hu Xinhua Developed Complete Theory on “Spread of Water Waves in Periodic Resonator Arrays”

Professor Hu Xinhua from Labatory of Advanced Material, Fudan University and his collaborators recently published the result of their new theoretical studies about “wave energy”. Their team developed complete theory on “Spread of Water Waves in periodic Resonator Arrays”, highlighting strong long-wave reflection, interesting interpretation of weight-bearing ability, and the application in electricity generation of wave energy.

The ocean not only provides us with a wealth of resources but also bring us a huge disaster such as the tsunami brought about by the East Japan earthquake. So far, the tsunami cannot be resisted or weakened but can only be detected from the seismic wave one hour earlier. Because the ocean waves are usually strong and thus difficult to resist completely, when they spread through a periodic structure, they can only be slightly weakened, which means the majority still pass, especially, when the wavelength is much larger than the cycle length. In fact, the wavelength of tsunami can be almost 500 kilometers in the ocean and 2~3 kilometers in the offshore.

Based on analytic derivations and numerical simulations, Prof. Hu and his collaborators found that near a low resonant frequency water waves cannot propagate through a periodic array of resonators (bottom-mounted split tubes) as if water has a negative effective gravitational acceleration and positive effective depth. This gives rise to a low-frequency resonant band gap in which water waves can be strongly reflected by the resonator array. For a damping resonator array, the resonant gap can also dramatically modify the absorption efficiency of water waves. The results provide a mechanism to block water waves and should find applications in making use of ocean wave energy.

VISITOR

Speech by Prof. Richard John Roberts, Nobel Laureate in Medicine

Prof. Richard John Roberts, 1993 Nobel Laureate in Medicine for discovery of split genes, was invited by Prof. Ma Hong, Dean of Fudan School of Life Sciences and delivered a speech titled A Life in Science at Fudan University on April 28. About 150 faculty and staff from Fudan School of Life Sciences were present.

In the speech, Prof. Roberts briefly discussed his personal experiences in science, beginning with his training as an organic chemist, the move to molecular biology and then on to restriction enzymes and the discovery of RNA splicing that led to the Nobel Prize in 1993. Since then he has been a scientist working in a company and has been using bioinformatics to explore many aspects of prokaryotic biology. His most recent work focuses on the functional annotation of bacterial genomes as part of a large project called COMBREX, in which scientists around the world, especially students, can participate. The essence of the project is the ongoing assembly of a database of functional predictions for unknown bacterial genes and the experimental testing of those predictions in the laboratories of expert biochemists.

Born in 1943, Prof. Richard John Roberts is a British biochemist and molecular biologist. In 1992, Roberts joined New England Biolabs, a biotechnology firm, as research director. He was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Phillip Allen Sharp for the discovery of introns in eukaryotic DNA and the mechanism of gene-splicing.
