CONFERENCE

U21 Managers’ Meeting Held at Fudan

As a member university of Universitas 21 (U21), an international network for leading research-intensive universities, Fudan University hosted U21 Managers’ Meeting from Oct 13 to 14, receiving over 30 senior representatives from 22 member universities. During the two-day meeting, U21 managers discussed a number of matters which concern all member institutions. It is the first face-to-face Managers’ meeting attended by representatives of two new members, University of Amsterdam and University of Connecticut.

 

Established in 1997, Universitas 21 is an international network of 23 leading research-intensive universities in fifteen countries. The network's purpose is to facilitate collaboration and cooperation between the member universities and to create opportunities for them on a scale that none of them would be able to achieve operating independently or through traditional bilateral alliances.

IOT Medicine Well Received at ISRD

The Seventh Shanghai International Symposium on Respiratory Diseases (ISRD) was held from 16-17 October in Shanghai by Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University. The idea of IOT Medicine raised by Prof. Bai Chunxue at the Respiratory Section of Zhongshan Hospital aroused wide attention from participants. IOT Medicine proposes a new way of medical treatment from passive after-illness treatment to an active precautious one, which is reported effective in saving the number of treatment and medical expenses.

 

IOT Medicine means a networked medical system where sensors are embedded. The concept proposes the combination of the Internet of Things and the Internet to realize the synchronization between patients and medical equipment, efficiently preventing illness in an early stage and lowering the risk of losing life.

 

As one of the top academic conferences on respiratory diseases in Asia-Pacific Region, the seventh ISRD carries out active exchanges on the application of IOT Medicine and arouses enthusiastic discussions from scholars on key issues such as chronic airway diseases, lung cancer and respiratory critical care medicine.

 

Scholars and academic institution leaders including President Yang Yuliang of Fudan University, Chariman of the American Thoracic Society Professor Schraufnagel, Deputy President of Zhongshan Hospital Prof. Zhu Tongyu, and so on participated the Opening Ceremony and President Yang Yuliang delivered a welcome speech.

The 17th Atmospheric Environment Science and Technology Conference Concludes

 

On the morning of Oct.16, the 17th Atmospheric Environment Science and Technology Conference, hosted by Atmospheric Environment Society Affiliated to Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, held by Fudan University, took place in Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center. The opening ceremony was hosted by Mr. CHAI Fahe, Secretary of Atmospheric Environment Society attached to Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences. Mr. Ren Guanping, Secretary of China Society of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Chen Xiaoman, Vice president of Fudan University, Mr. ZHANG Quan, Director of Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, and Academician Wang Wenxing, Director-General of Atmospheric Environment Society attached to Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences delivered speeches.

 

Academician HAO Jiming from Qsinghua University, ,Academician TANG Xiaoyan and Academician Tao Su from Peking University, Academician Chuan Jiamo from Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Jiang Guibin from Research Center for Eco-Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Hong Zhongxiang from Institute of Atmospheric Environment Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ms. Wang Chunxia, Director of Chemistry Department of National Natural Science Foundation of China as well as 14 excellent young fund guarantees, Cheung Kong Scholars and graduates, attended the conference. Prof. Chen Jianmin, Vice director of Atmospheric Environment Society attached to Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences and Professor of Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Fudan University was appointed as secretary-general of the conference.

 

The theme of the conference this year is Atmospheric environment and global change. During the conference, experts and scholars focused on combined air pollution, such as aerosol science, including smog, acid rain and photochemical smog. They also discussed about pollution process, air quality modeling, forecast and pre-warning, human health and climate change, atmospheric environment control and policies, atmospheric pollution control technique, and atmosphere comprehensive observation and remote control. In the conference, they also explored ways to cooperate with domestic and international partners.

2010 Pacific Rim Digital Library Alliance Concludes

 

On October 20th and 21st, the Annual Meeting 2010 of Pacific Rim Digital Library Alliance (PRDLA), which was undertaken by Fudan University Library, was held at Fudan University Center for American Studies. Over forty curators of the union members, who come from USA, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Korea, Japan China (including Taiwan, Hongkong and Macau), attended the meeting. Concerning the theme of the meeting this year “Having knowledge effectiveness through digitalization of teaching resources: future and prospect of library services in 21 century”, they exchanged experience with each other and discussed about the development of the modern digital library. Prof. Gui Yonghao, Vice President of Fudan University, attended the opening ceremony and addressed the audience.

 

The meeting consists of four themes as following: “large-scale digitalization and traditional library service”, “international cooperation and collecting cultural heritages in the digital era”, “obtaining and managing the digital resources: problems and challenges” and “Services promotion and exchange of the digital library”.

Symposium on “Opportunities and Challenges of Scientific Development in the Global Era” Concludes

 

The Symposium on “Opportunities and challenges of scientific development in the global era” was held on October 22, which was co-hosted by Institute for Advanced Social Science of Fudan University and Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange. Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode met the guests. Pan Shiwei, Director of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Chairman Mao Gaowen of Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

During the meeting, the Institute for Advanced Social Sciences and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange collaboration also held seminars between the two parties.

Huashan Hospital Hosts the 3rd International “High-end Health Care and Building” Conference

 

The Inaugural meeting of Shanghai Foreign Medical Research Council Medical Association as well as the 3rd “High-end Health Care and Building” Forum was held in Shanghai World Financial Center.

 

Director of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau Mr. Xu Jianguang, President of Shanghai Medical Association Mr. Liu Junhui, Vice President of Fudan University Mr. Wang Xiaolin, Medical Officer of U.S. Consulate General Shanghai Ms. Susan Hine, Secretary of Party Committee of Huashan Hospital, Ms. Gu Xiaoping delivered speeches on the forum.

 

So far, there are over 500,000 foreigners living in Shanghai. The number of short-term visitors is increasing as well. Medical service, as one of the most important criteria in deciding a city’s living quality, is highly recognized. The forum is served as a communicative stage for people to exchange experiences and thoughts, to share achievements, in order to better arrange the resources and enhance the academic research capability, which will finally encourage the development of Foreign Medical Service in Shanghai.

COOPERATION

MoU Signed Between SBI Holdings and Fudan Science Park

 

On the afternoon of Oct.18, the signing ceremony of the memorandum on establishing the private equity fund between SBI Holdings, Inc. ("SBI") of Japan and Fudan University Science Park was held in Fudan University. Yoshitaka Kitao, Representative Director & CEO of SBI, Gui Yong-hao, Vice President of Fudan University, and Tang Hai-dong, Vice Governor of Yangpu District Shanghai attended the ceremony. President of Fudan University Yang Yuliang met with Yoshitaka Kitao and his entourage before the ceremony.

 

Jointly set up by Fudan University Science Park and SBI, the Fudan-SBI Fund is a parallel fund, namely, this fund composes of one USD-based fund created by SBI overseas and another RMB-based fund established by Fudan and SBI in Shanghai.

 

The jointly-run fund will invest mainly in the fields of IT, biotechnology, environment engineering, new energy and materials technology, areas where the University has deep understandings and advantages. Currently the majority of related companies of Fudan are focusing on these areas. The main investing targets will include firms which Fudan hatches or hold share in, start-ups held by teachers, students or alumni, companies in the Science Park and others who help transferring scientific and technological achievements of the University. The investment will cover early stage, growing-up stage and pre-IPO stage.

 

SBI is one of the largest and most renowned comprehensive financial groups. Over 20 famous companies such as Alibaba, Sina, Oak Pacific Interactive and Goldwind have been in the investment portfolio of the Group. Cooperated with Tsinghua Holdings Co., Ltd., SBI has already established a foreign RMB-based private equity fund which is the first in Beijing and second in the country. There is also a 100-million USD off-shore private equity fund set up by SBI and Beida Jade Bird Group. Through these explorations, the SBI group has gained valuable experience on collaborating with universities.

C9 Presidents Discussing Chinese Models of World Class University

 

On the morning of October 10, 2010, “The Series Seminar on Building a World Class University” was held at Fudan. Representatives from nine Chinese universities (C9), namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, University of Science and Technology of China and Harbin Institute of Technology, gathered at Fudan to share their experience and opinions on university reform, construction and development, discussing to create Chinese models of building a world class university. Mr. Shen Xiaoming, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony and made a welcome address.

 

The seminar extended a special invitation to Mr. Guo Lixin, Deputy Director of Degree Committee of State Council. He gave a report centered on “Accelerating the Construction of World Class University and High-level University Based on the Spirit of Educational Development Plan”. In the following session, President Yang Yuliang of Fudan University, President Yang Wei of Zhejiang University, President Chen Jun of Nanjing University and other participants made speeches on 8 topics, such as Cultural consciousness and responsibility of China’s top universities; H Model of research universities with Chinese characteristics; Exploring C9’s cultural spirit, etc.

 

During the seminar, Presidents of Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and some Australian universities were also invited to participate. After the seminar, C9 League members signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Australian Go8 Union so as to deepen the future cooperation in student/faculty exchange, research collaboration, and university development strategy.

 

On October 12, the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Association of Chinese University Presidents opened and the theme for this year is “Internal Governance Model of Chinese Universities”. Presidents from C9 exchanged their opinions in the regard.

SIST Celebrates Its 10th anniversary

 

The ceremony of 10th anniversary of SIST (School of Information Science and Technology) was held on the morning of Oct.17, 2010. About 600 participants attended the event including Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University, Prof. Zhang Yihua, Vice President of Fudan University, Wang Weiqi and Fan Dianyuan, Members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Gan Fuxi, Member of Chinese Academy of Science as well as other top scientists in IT field from domestic and abroad, deans of famed Information Schools, delegation of schoolfellows, professors, teachers and students.

 

Prof. Qin Shaode addressed the audience at the ceremony. Prof. Zheng Lirong, Dean of SIST, made a brief introduction of SIST’s overview and 10-year-history regarding the education, research and achievements and introduced a new thought of SIST’s future development.

 

On the afternoon of Oct. 17, the International Forum on Future Information Science, Technology and Education was held as a part of the series of SIST 10th anniversary celebration events, the forum had invited world-famous experts and Deans in the Engineering to participate in this big event. The forum consisted of two parts: theme speech on the future of information sciences, technology and education and panel discussion on how to build a world-class School of Information and Communication Science and Technology.

 

Founded in May 2000, the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) merged with the Departments of Electronic Engineering (established in 1982), Optics (established in 1954) and Computer Science and Engineering (established in 1975). The School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) includes five departments and one sub-school, which are Department of Electronic Engineering, Department of Optical Science and Engineering, Department of Communication Science and Engineering, Department of Microelectronics, Department of Light Sources and Illuminating Engineering and School of Microelectronics. SIST has a faculty of over 240 and an enrollment of over 3100 students in various programs. The school has developed a complete educational system covering undergraduates, master and PhD candidates and professional degree Master of Engineering students.

The 4th Fudan Board Meeting Concludes at Taipei

 

At the kind invitation of University Board Member Mr. Samuel Yin, the 4th meeting of the Board of Fudan University was held at the Asia-Pacific Center from October 23 to 25 in Taipei successfully. More than twenty representatives of board members assembled to plan for the future development of Fudan University.

Fudan Vice President and Board Secretary-General Xu Zheng presided over the Council meeting and gave the annual report for the Council. Fudan President and Council Chairman Yang Yuliang comment on the need to strengthen the cooperation with Taiwanese universities in the Humanities and Social Sciences fields in his speech. At the meeting, President Yang Yuliang also issued letters of appointment and Fudan medals to Mr. Wang Shaoyu as the new board member.

The KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan and head of Taiwan's local legislative bodies Wang Jin-ping met representatives of managers and delivered speeches respectively at the Welcome dinner on October 23.

Mr. Samuel Yin graduated from Taiwan University and Chengchi University and now served as President of Ruentex Financial Group. Yin Yanliang was appointed as Director-General of Fudan Guanghua Education Foundation and set up "Fudan Guanghua Scholarship" for outstanding graduate students and advanced undergraduates since 1990.

Prof. Deng Zhenglai Invited by Freiburg Institute for Advanced Study

 

During October 25 to 27, Prof. Deng Zhenglai, Dean of Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences (IAS), was invited to attend the International Conference hosted by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Freiburg. The theme of this conference is “University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS ) in a Global Perspective: Promises, Challenges, New Frontiers”. On this occasion, Prof. Deng made a report of “Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences: Emphasis on Interdisciplinary Research”.

 

Altogether 32 institutes for advanced studies in 17 countries sent their deans or vice deans to this conference. During the meeting, the participants discussed on the following topics: The Research University in the 21st Century: Perspectives, Challenges, Visions; Policies for Fostering Excellent Research and International Cooperation; Institutional Designs and Disciplinary Constellations: Exemplary paradigms; UBIAS Embracing the Full Range of Academic Disciplines and UBIAS Placing a Special Emphasis on the Humanities and Social Sciences, etc.

 

Prof. Deng and its Vice Dean Prof. Guo Sujian also had an intensive exchange with other participants and initiated to host the next conference at Fudan in the summer of 2011.

Fudan Professor Gives Keynote Speech at the China-EU High-Level Cultural Forum

 

To improve cultural relations, exchanges and understanding, the first EU-China High-Level Cultural Forum was held in Brussels on Oct 6. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso were both present at the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. As the Chinese Chair, Chinese linguist Qiu Xigui from Fudan Research Center for Chinese Excavated Classics and Paleography gave a keynote speech titled Chinese thinker Laozi and Western philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

 

As the European Chair, Italian philosopher Umberto Eco also gave a speech on communication and cultural exchanges between Europe and China. The forum is organized jointly by the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Culture as part of the 13th EU-China Summit. The event's main objective is to strengthen personnel exchanges and to foster mutual understanding between the EU and China.

Professor JIN Li Awarded HLHL Prize

 

On Oct. 20, Fudan Professor Jin Li from School of Life Sciences was awarded 2010 Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize (HLHL Prize) for Scientific and Technological Progress at HLHL Foundation Conference in Beijing. At present were State Councilor Liu Yandong, member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Academician Lu Yongxiang, Vice Chairman of Standing Committee of National People’s Congress, Mr. Wan Gang, Vice-Chairman of CPPCC and Minister of Science and Technology. This year HLHL Prize went to 51 distinguished researchers, 7 of whom are from Shanghai.

 

The Ho Leung Ho Lee (HLHL) Foundation was established in 1994 by the generous donation of Mr. Ho Sin-Hang, Mr. Leung Kau-Kui, Mr. Ho Tim and Mr. Lee Guo-Wei. The purpose of the foundation is to promote Chinese science and technology and reward excellent Chinese scholars in scientific and medical fields. The HLHL Foundation is the largest private scientific and technological foundation in China.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex Visits Fudan

 

On the morning of October 8, 2010, Prof. Michael Farthing, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex visited Fudan University and met with President Yang Yuliang. Both sides shared their ideas in strengthening the research cooperation and student exchanges between the two institutions.

 

The University of Sussex was founded in 1961, located in the south-east coast city of Brighton and Hove. As a renowned comprehensive university in UK, it has 2 Nobel Laureates and many royal academicians.

 

Prof. Bernard Weiss, Dean of its School of Engineering and Design and Dr. Philip A Baker, Director of International Office also joined the meeting. Fudan School of Information had discussion with Prof. Weiss on future cooperation.

Visit by University of Maine at Farmington President

On Oct. 8, President Theo Kalikow and Vice President Allen Berger, University of Maine at Farmington, visited Fudan University. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Fudan Vice President Gui Yonghao. University of Maine has the intention to cooperate with the school of Foreign Languages and Literature, hoping to further the communication and cooperation with Fudan.

 

University of Maine is a public university with Arts and Science schools. Since 1998, University of Maine has been on the most outstanding school list for 13 years according to the “U.S. News and World Report” selection. In a national survey in the U.S, it was named the one of the top 20 universities which helps the students most to the road to success.

Visit by Dr. Lee Shau Kee

 

Dr. Lee Shau Kee, Chairman of the Hong Kong Pei Hua Education Foundation, Chairman of Henderson Land Group, visited Fudan University on October 9, 2010, Chancellor Qin Shaode, Vice President Xu Zheng accompanied Dr. Lee Shau Kee to visit Jiangwan Campus. Lee also had a brief talk with Hong Kong students of Lee Shau Kee Scholarship Awards. After the visit, President Yang Yuliang hosted a banquet and had a cordial and friendly exchange on the humane spirit of University.

 

In the afternoon, Lee Shau Kee and his delegation visited the Institute of Chinese Historical Geography and the ancient text documents and research center at Guanghua Building.

 

The other visitors included Mr. Lin Gaoyan, Vice Chairman and Deputy General Manager of Henderson Land Development Co., Ltd, Mr. Fok Zheng huan, Chairman of Fok Ying Tung, Education Foundation and Mr. Wang Mingang, Standing Committee of the Hong Kong Pei Hua Education Foundation.

Pfizer CEO Meets Fudan President

 

On October 9, 2010, President Yang Yuliang received the delegation of senior representatives of Pfizer, the world's largest research-based biopharmaceutical company. Mr. Jeffery Kindler, Chairman and CEO, Mr. Mikael Dolsten, Senior Vice President & President, Worldwide Research & Development, Dr. Tan Lingshi, Manager of Pfizer’s China Research and Develop Center and Dr. Yang Qing, Head of Asia for Pfizer Pharma Therapeutics Research & Development, attended and discussed the collaboration between enterprise and university. President Yang hopes both can strengthen the cooperation not only in personnel communications but also in pharmacy development and bio-medical research fields.

 

The partnership with Fudan University to establish a graduate program in Clinical Data Management and Statistical Programming was announced on July, 2009. This three year Master’s Degree program, a first of its kind in China, is designed to develop qualified professionals to support clinical research which is rapidly increasing in China.

 

The delegation headed by Mr. Jeffery Kindler also attended the 5th Anniversary of Pfizer’s China Research and Development Center. Prof. Zhu Yizhun, Dean of School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, Prof. Wang Ling, Vice Dean of Fudan University Graduate School and Prof. Hou Aijun, Vice Dean of School of Pharmacy attended celebration. Prof. Zhu Yizhun made a speech on behalf of Fudan University.

Visit by the President of Paris Tech

 

A delegation from Paris Tech consisting of its President Cyrille Van Effenterre, Director of International Office Jean Pierre Broyart, China Program Director Ping Huang and representatives of its China Office visited Fudan University. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Vice President Gui Yonghao, as well as representatives from Fudan Department of Chemistry, School of Mathematics and School of Management. The two parties had a heated discussion on collaborations in the relevant areas.

 

Founded in 1991, Paris Tech is one of the collegiate universities in France, which gathers 12 of the best French engineering schools, covering nearly the whole spectrum of engineering science, and 1 business school, aiming to be of comparable status to the most famous universities of technology around the world. Fudan President Yang Yuliang visited Paris Tech and its Ecole Polytechnique and ESPCI in June.

Visit by Sciences Po

 

On the morning of Oct. 21, Francis Verillaud, Vice president of Sciences Po, and Cindy Arnold, the representative of Sciences Po China Office, visited Fudan University. Their main intention was to sign the corporation agreement of the dual master degree program in “Communication and Media” with the Journalism School of Fudan. Jin Li, Vice President of Fudan University welcome the guests and signed the agreement with Vice President Verillaud. According to the agreement, the program will start to recruit students globally next autumn. The students will study in Sciences Po and Fudan University for one year respectively, and getting master degrees from both universities.

 

Sciences Po is reputed to be the cradle of elites in France. It has already successfully started a dual degree program in “Europe and Asia in Global Affairs” with Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs in 2010. The first class of students has begun their initial-year of studies in Paris and is expected to finish the second year at Fudan.

Visit by Danish Minster of Culture

 

On Oct. 21, Danish Minister of Culture Mr. Per Stig Moeller visited Fudan University and attended a seminar at Fudan Institute of Advanced Study in Social Sciences (IAS) under the theme of “The Role of Culture in the Chinese Society Today and in the Future”. The Danish Ambassador to China Friis Arne Petersen, the Consul General in Shanghai Susanne Hyldelund, and some others accompanied the Minister.

 

Before the seminar, Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode warmly welcomed Minister Moeller and the delegation. Chancellor Qin briefed the delegation of the university history and its latest development, expressing the wish to establish extensive collaborations with Danish universities and culture institutions. Professor Deng Zhenglai, Dean of Fudan IAS was also present at the meeting.

Visit by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing

 

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the opening of the General Consulate of France in Shanghai, former French President Mr. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing visited Fudan University on October 21st for the third time and gave a speech to Fudan students and faculties. The topics of his speech refer to the Asia’s status around the world, the crisis in EU, the relation between EU and China, as well as the significance of the rise of China.

 

On the very day thirty years ago, i.e., October 21st, 1980, the then President of The Republic of France Mr. d’Estaing visited Fudan University for the first time and gave a speech in Xianghui Hall. He was welcomed warmly by the students and faculties, and the scene was unprecedented.

Visit by the President of Lyon University

 

On October 21st, Lyon University President Michel Lussault led a delegation to visit Fudan University. Vice-president of Fudan University Prof. Chen Xiaoman met Mr Lussault and his delegation. Vice President Chen introduced chiefly Fudan’s attempts to promote its international cooperation and faculty-exchange, as well as to increase the scientific research input. During the meeting the professors and scholars have discussed topics of common interests.

 

The University of Lyon (Université de Lyon), located in LyonFrance, is a center for higher education and research comprising 19 universities and institutes of higher education. The main universities in this center are: Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, Lumière University Lyon 2, Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 and EM Lyon, which are strong in medicine, natural science, finance and management worldwide.

Visit by President of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

 

On Oct. 26, Prof. IGNACIO SANCHEZ, President of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile visited Fudan University. Vice President of Fudan University, Prof. Liu Jianzhong met the delegation.

 

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile was established in 1888. Having developed for over a century, it is now a comprehensive university, including humanities, social science, nature science, technology science, economics and management and health care.

Lecture by President of Lombardia, Italy

 

On the morning of Oct. 29, the President of the Region of Lombardia, Mr. Roberto Formigoni paid a visit to Fudan University and gave a lecture on “The Importance of Regional Districts for Economic Development” to the Fudan-Bocconi DDIM (dual degree program in international management) students. Fudan Vice President Chen Limin welcomed President Formigoni and his delegation after the lecture.

 

Known as the engine of the Italian domestic economy, the Region of Lombardia is the most populated and wealthiest area in Italy, and is the hub for Italian textile, clothing and fashion industries. The cradle of international fashion industry Milan is the capital of the Region of Lombardia.
