COOPERATION

Fudan-Sciences Po DDM Program Kicks Off

 

Fudan University and Sciences Po successfully kicked off their Dual Degree Master Program “Europe and Asia in Global Affairs” this fall. 18 students out of nearly 70 applicants from all over the world were enrolled in the first class of this two-year program. These students will study in Paris for the first year, and move to Shanghai next year to finish the second year studies at Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) and receive degrees from both institutions after graduation.

 

The DDM Program is a result of the 7 years of fruitful cooperation between SIRPA and Sciences Po. The agreement was officially signed by Fudan President Prof. Yang Yuliang and Sciences Po President Richard Descoings in June 2010 when President Yang visited Sciences Po.

Inauguration of Fudan-Durham Joint Center for Financial Research

 

Inauguration ceremony of Fudan-Durham Joint Center for Financial Research was held at Fudan School of Economics on September 11, 2010. Prof. Liu Hongzhong from School of Economics assumed as the Chinese Director of Fudan - Durham Joint Center.

 

Professor Yuan Zhigang, Dean of School of Economics presided over the ceremony. Chancellor Qin Shaode of Fudan University and Professor Chris Higgins, President of Durham University addressed respectively. Chancellor Qin pointed out that the establishment of the Joint Center for Financial Research will allow a higher level of the financial discipline. President Chris Higgins said that Fudan University is a prestigious university in China, and the establishment of the Centre is a powerful combination.

2010 Shanghai World Expo • World Café” Held at SICC

On Sep.7, “2010 Shanghai World Expo • World Café” was held at Shanghai International Convention Center, which was jointly organized by Fudan University and Taiwan Cultural Center of World Citizens. Eminent Chinese elites from home and abroad gathered together to discuss and exchange ideas and thoughts on “What Chinese can do for the 21st Century”. Dean of Fudan School of Management, Prof. Lu Xiongwen and Chairman of Taiwan Cultural Center of World Citizens, Mr. LU Xuehai presided over the opening ceremony. President of Fudan, Prof. Yang Yuliang attended the meeting with Executive Vice Presidents Prof. Zhang Yihua and Prof. Wang Weiping.

 

Closely related to the Shanghai Expo theme “Better Cities, Better Life”, topics like low-carbon city, innovation and technology, new economic develop mode were discussed during the meeting. Through this meeting, Chinese elites from all over the world made great contributions to China's urban development, urban planning and lifestyle improvements, future technological innovation system, the new model of development issues and so on.

 

The World Café is an innovative yet simple methodology for hosting conversations on questions of importance. These conversations link and build on each other as people move between groups, exchange ideas, and discover new insights into the questions or issues that are most important in their life, work, or community. As a process, the World Café can evoke and make visible the collective intelligence of any group, thus increasing people’s capacity for effective action in pursuit of common aims.

 

Taiwan Cultural Center of World Citizens is a center of the world view education set up by about 10 university professors and Chinese Presidents of foreign companies. It includes varieties of functions such as magazine publishing and dissemination. The number of the current network membership and students are about 170,000 and 4,000.

President Yang Yuliang Attends WEF Annual Meeting of New Champions 2010

 

At the invitation of the World Economic Forum (WEF), President Yang Yuliang attended the WEF Annual Meeting of New Champions 2010, which was held in north China’s Tianjin Municipality on September 14. President Yang was specially invited as an expert to the Ministerial Meeting on Innovation and Sustainable Growth, chaired by Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang.

 

Before the meeting, President Yang also had a private meeting with Mr. Michele Petochi, Director, Head of University Community, discussing possibilities of future cooperation between Fudan and WEF. Director Petochi also invited President Yang to recommend Fudan renowned professors to join the WEF Global Agenda Council network.

Fudan Research Center for French-speaking Regions Established

 

The opening ceremony of Fudan Research Center for French-speaking regions and the international forum on "French - the language to success" were held at Fudan University on September 21, 2010. The forum is co-organized by the French Consulate General in Shanghai, Fudan Department of French Language and Literature. Ambassadors and Consul Generals of a number of French-speaking countries, representatives of AUF (Agence universitaire de la Francophonie) and OIF (Organisation internationale de la Francophonie), internationally renowned experts and scholars of French language, were present at the event. More than 400 teachers and students from France, Canada, Vietnam, Cambodia, Switzerland, Belgium, Burundi, Benin and other French-speaking countries, as well as from Peking University, Renmin University of China, Foreign Affairs University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Nanjing University, Yunnan University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Xi'an International Studies University, Sichuan International Studies University, East China Normal University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai Foreign Trade University, Fudan University and other institutions attended the meeting.

 

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Chen Liangming, Chair of Department of French Language and Literature. President Yang Yuliang of Fudan University and Mr. Hervé Ladsous, the French Ambassador to China jointly inaugurated the center.

 

In the afternoon, participants were divided into three sub-symposium with the themes of "French, a language for study and research," "French, the language to success in the workplace" and "French, a language for cultural exchanges".

12 New Professional Master Degree Programs Approved by The Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council

Recentlythe Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council formally announced the newly approved professional master degree list. Fudan University has 12 new professional master degree programs approved, including finance, taxation, international commerce, ect. Fudan ranks 1st among universities in Shanghai. All of the new professional master degrees and their areas will be included into the 2011 nationwide graduate student admission plan.

 

The newly approved 12 professional master degree programs are: finance, taxation, international commerce, insurance, assets evaluation, education, journalism & communication, publication, relic & museum, nursing, pharmacy, tourist management. It largely increased the scale and variety of professional education areas at Fudan University. Now there are 24 master and 1 doctoral professional degree programs.

 

Since 1991, the year in which MBA experimental training began, Fudan University has developed 12 professional training programs including Juris Master, Master of Clinical Medicine, Medical Doctor, MPA and Master of Engineering.

Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences Included in 6 International Index Databases

Till September of 2010, full text of Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences English version(FJHSShas been included by six largest international index databases of social science, which are Social Sciences Index, International Political Science Abstracts, PAIS International Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts and EBSCO Database. FJHSS was first established at the end of 2004, and published as journal every three month from 2008, as the very first comprehensive English journal of social sciences among the universities in China. The journal aims to become one of the most important international journals to introduce research results in the area of Chinese social sciences to the world.

 

Almost all libraries in universities in US or Europe subscribe to the six biggest international index databases of social science. After FJHSS was included in mainstream index system in western world, readers in western world can read and download the published paper in the journal by subscribing to the six biggest international index databases or other index databases, thus greatly increases the circulation of this journal to western academia and reader population in western countries. After very strict reviewing process, full text of FJHSS was included in six largest international index database of social science, which is a significant breakthrough for FJHSS to enter the mainstream index system of western world. The quality of the journal has been well recognized and it indicates that the journal has great potential to become a high level platform for communication between Chinese and international academic circles.

Substantial Growth in Fudan’s NSFC Programs 2010

Fudan Office of Science and Technology declared recently that Fudan University has been funded with 156.842 million CNY by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for 422 approved projects for the year 2010.The number of projects and funding amount saw year-on-year rises of 38 percent and 43 percent. Fudan’s research projects funded by NSFC include General Program projects, Key Program projects, Major Program projects and 3,000 Special Fund projects, Young Scientists Fund, Overseas, Hong Kong and Macao Young Scientists Cooperation Fund and so on.

 

With the consistent support from NSFC, a big number of major research achievements and breakthroughs have been obtained and NSFC has made important contributions in promoting the progress of Chinese basic research and talent training.

Prof. Zhu Yizhun Wins 2010 Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award

Word came recently that Singaporean Prof. Zhu Yizhun, Dean of Fudan School of Pharmacy won 2010 Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award.

 

In 2005, Prof. Zhu was appointed as Dean of School of Pharmacy and Director of Fudan Institute of Drug R&D. Prof. Zhu published more than 90 SCI papers with more than 1120 citations and edited 2 books for the natural products research and received good recognition in this area. He is an editor and reviewer for several international scientific journals. Meanwhile, he serves also as External Expert/evaluator for Centre of drug evaluation, HSA (Singapore) and SFDA (China). He holds several US and China patents for the drug discovery and extensively involved for drug R&D. One cardioprotective drug has been successfully launched in Singapore. Dr. Zhu was awarded National Distinguished Young Scientists Grant in 2008 and National Chief Scientist for 973 project and National Drug Discovery platform in 2009.

 

Shanghai Municipality introduced Shanghai Magnolia Award which is named after Shanghai’s official flower in 1989 to express appreciation to foreigners who live in Shanghai and contribute significantly to the city’s economic performance, international relations, business environment, management standards and community development.

Four Fudan Faculty Appointed Chief Scientist by National “973” Program

Recently, Ministry of Science and Technology announced the List of National Basic Research Program (“973” Program) and National Key Research Program in 2011. Four programs from Fudan University were elected. Professor Academician Yang Yuliang from Department of Macromolecular Science and Professor Li Huawei from EENT Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University were appointed as chief scientist in National “973” program, obtaining 26.2 million RMB and 28 million RMB in program funding respectively. Professor Shen Jian from Department of Physics and Professor Ma Hong from School of Life Science were appointed as chief scientist in National Key Science Research Program, obtaining 24 million RMB and 26 million RMB in program funding respectively.

 

The program “Basic research on major issue related to high performance carbon fiber”, led by Professor Academician Yang Yuliang, mainly conducts research of key scientific issues on production and preparation of high technology carbon fiber, focusing on polymer chain structure, phase separation of multiphase polymer system, control of aggregation structure, viscoelasticity of coupled polymer, stretching process of fiber in complex chemical reaction, structure and fracture of carbon fiber, so as to develop new technology and new high performance polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fiber with our own intellectual property rights.

 

The program “Basic research on pathogenesis and intervention of Sensorineural hearing loss”, led by Professor Li huawei, focuses on the damage mechanism, protection and function reconstruction of hair cell and spiral ganglion, exploring genetic, environmental and aging factors causing hair cell and spiral ganglion damage by investigating nucleic acids, proteins, cells, and cochlear structures, to provide theoretical basis to establish prevention and intervention system of sensorineural hearing loss.

 

The program “Hypersensitive quantum adjust and control on complex electronic systems”, led by Professor Shen Jian, addresses the demand of quantum control, especially huge demand of physical characteristic control on complex quantum functional material from national information and microelectronics fields, objecting complex oxides and new two-dimensional electron system, conducting research on magnify small change in local quantum state to measurable physical quantity, emphasizing on adjusting and controlling response of complex quantum system to external parameters changes, investigating general rule and related mechanism of amplified external parameters response to novel quantum phenomena caused by sequence competition, to establish theoretical and experimental framework of hypersensitive quantum adjust and control, detect new quantum sequence and characters, explore different adjust and control modes in different systems, and lay a solid theoretical foundation in our high-tech areas such as information and material.

 

The program “Molecular mechanism of Chromosomes interaction during plant Meiosis process”, led by Professor Ma Hong, addresses huge demand on Description of molecular mechanism of plant meiosis in national development and reproduction filed, using Arabidopsis thaliana, rice and corn as material, conduct further research on the molecular mechanisms in meiosis process, to significantly enhance the acknowledge of key molecular function, improve out international academic status, provide theoretical guidance of increasing crop yield, improving breeding efficiency and Human of Reproductive Health.

Visit by Barcelona Universities Delegation

 

On September 1, a delegation from Barcelona, consisting of vice rectors of Universitad Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat Ramon Llull (URL), as well as representatives from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), ESADE, EADA and Barcelona city government, paid a visit to Fudan University. Pro-Vice President Professor Chen Yinzhang warmly welcomed the delegation and discussed possible collaborations between Fudan and Spanish universities.

Visit by Vice President of Ecole Polytechnique

 

Dr. Elisabeth Crepon, Vice President for International Relations of Ecole Polytechnique, visited Fudan on September 8, together with 2 professors specialized in chemistry. The aim of the visit was to discuss the joint master program with Fudan Department of Chemistry. During the meeting with Pro-Vice President Professor Chen Yinzhang, both Dr. Crepon and Prof. Chen expressed the wish to enhance and deepen the exchanges and cooperation between Fudan and EP, particularly in the area of mathematics, chemistry, physics and engineering among the others.

Professor Markus Antonietti from Max Planck Institute Visits Institute of Advanced Materials

Prof. Markus Antonietti, Director of the Max Planck Institute of Germany visited Fudan Institute of Advanced Materials on September 13, 2010. Director Zhao Dongyuan met with the guests and introduced overall research and development of the advanced materials lab. Prof. Markus Antonietti delivered a wonderful report entitled "Hydrothermal Carbonization: New Energy Materials or Climate Tool" to teachers and students. Prof. Markus Antonietti held talks with Professor Shao Zhengzhong, Professor Wang Lianhui, Professor Wang Changchun, Professor Peng Huisheng and Professor Zheng Gengfeng in the afternoon.

Swiss Delegation and Nobel Laureate Lectured at Fudan

 

On September 13, 2010, Mr. Juerg Burri, Deputy Director, State Secretariat for Education and Research, Switzerland, Prof. Kurt Wuetrich, 2002 Nobel Chemistry Prize Winner, Zurich former Mayor and Mr. Thomas Wagner, Chairman of Swiss and Chinese Friendship Association, totally 10 guests visited Fudan University. Vice President Prof. Gui Yonghao received them at Fenglin Campus. Dean Ma Hong of School of Life Science, Deputy Dean Wei Xunbin of Research Institute of Biomedicine also joined the meeting.

 

VP Gui introduced our educational concept and the strategies in the fields of international cooperation and university development. Other professors showed the cooperation fruits in life science and biomedicine.

 

Later Prof. Kurt Wuetrich made a lecture with a topic of “A Lifetime of Lessons from Basic Research” as one of the activities to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the birth of the theory of relativity. The lecture was warmly welcomed by the students.

Visit by Finish Minister of Defense

On the afternoon of September 14, Finish Minister of Defense and Minister of State Ownership, Mr. Jyri Hakamies visited Fudan University. Vice president of Fudan University Dr. XU Zheng, accompanied by the Deputy Dean of Fudan School of Management Professor YIN Zhiwen, warmly welcomed Minister Hakamies’ delegation. Minister Hakamies made a speech titled “State Ownership Steering In Finland” to the students afterwards The faculties and students asked questions about the social responsibility of the enterprises, education and employment in Finland, as well as major problems that Finish companies are facing with.

Visit by Konstanz University President

Prof. Ulrich Ruediger, President of Konstanz University in Germany visited Fudan on September 15, 2010. Prof. Katharina Holzinger, Vice President International and Ms. Regina Sonntag-Krupp, Director of International Office, and Ms. Alexandra Wang, Beijing Office Representative accompanied him.

 

President Ruediger once visited Fudan to attend a physics workshop. This is his first visit after taken the presidentship in 2009. President Yang Yuliang received the delegation and both sides expressed the willingness to strengthen the relations and promote the cooperation.

Visit by Australian National University President

 

On the morning of Sept.16, 2010, President of Australian National University, Prof. Ian Chubb, visited Fudan University, accompanied by Prof. Richard Rigby from the ANU China Institute and Mr. Darren Brown, Director of International Affairs. Prof. Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University met the delegation. Prof. Wu Xinbo, Deputy Dean of school of International Relations and Public Affairs, and Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office Tang Wenqing attended the meeting.

 

Two presidents exchanged ideas on undergraduate education, world economy as well as culture understandings. Both presidents agreed that double-degree programs or students leadership forums will provide opportunities for students, which may better serve the purpose of education. After the meeting, two presidents signed cooperative contract.

Visit by President of Free University Berlin

Prof. Peter-André Alt, President of Free University Berlin visited Fudan University and met with Vice President Chen Xiaoman on September 17, 2010. Prof. Dr. Klaus Muehlhahn in Chinese History and Culture, and Dr. Thomas Schmidt-Doerr, Beijing Office Representative also participated in the meeting.

 

The Center for Global Politics at Free University Berlin has formed a long term relationship with Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs. They jointly held the Global Politics Summer School in Shanghai. It was launched by the two universities in 2004 and is financially supported by DAAD and Fudan Graduate School. In 2009, 31 students from China and Germany studied in this program.

 

After the meeting with VP Chen Xiaoman, both agreed to strengthen the collaborations and have more faculty exchange in other disciplines.

On the afternoon of Sept. 17, Prof. Robert Zimmer, President of Chicago University, visited Fudan University. Prof. Yang Yuliang, President of Fudan University attended the meeting. Director of Chicago University Beijing Liaison Office Yang Dali and Vice Director Yuan Qi, Deputy Dean of School of International Relations and Public Affairs Prof. Wu Xinbo, Deputy Dean of School of Philosophy Prof. Zhang Shuangli, Deputy Dean of Foreign Affairs Office Dr. Zhu Chouwen, attended the meeting.

 

President Yang Yuliang discussed possibilities of cooperation in overseas exchange and cross- disciplinary cooperation with Chicago University with President Zimmer.

Visit by President of Brandon University

 

On Sept. 17, Vice President of Fudan University, Prof. Jin Li, met President of Brandon University Dr. Deborah Poff. Brandon University is located in Manitoba in Canada, which has a small population of 40,000 people. Established in 1899, Brandon University is one of the oldest universities in Canada. The university has more than 3000 students in 30 majors, among which music and fine art are quite outstanding.

 

Prof. Deborah expressed her wishes in establishing cooperation with Fudan University in the near future during the meeting. Vice President, Prof. Jin Li, agreed upon the ideas and looked forward to more cooperation with universities in Canada.

Visit by Saudi Arabia Youth Delegation

 

Sep. 22 is the Chinese Mid-autumn Festival of 2010. A youth delegation of over 150 people came to Fudan University to participate in a forum hosted by the All-China Youth Federation. The delegation consisted of students from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Peking University, Fudan University, and 5 other Chinese universities. The theme of the forum is “enhancing the understanding, deepening the friendship, looking into the future”.

 

Vice Director Lu Yongzhen of the All-China Youth Federation and President Yang Yuliang of Fudan University warmly welcomed the delegation and delivered speeches in the forum. 2010 witnesses 20 years of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

 

Speaking at the Saudi-Chinese Youth Forum at Fudan University in Shanghai on Sep. 22, Prince Mansour bin Miteb, Minister of Municipal and Rural affairs, said the coming together of the youth of the two countries is a good augury. “This cooperation between our youngsters will help us build bridges of understanding which in turn will benefit the whole of humanity,” he said.

 

The prince conveyed the good wishes of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for the success of the forum and underscored the role of youth in building a peaceful world for tomorrow.

 

Yousef Al-Sadoun, Undersecretary for Economic and Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said: “Saudi and Chinese youth share many aspirations and ambitions. Our aspiration, as rightly pointed out by Chinese president, is the struggle for truth and glory.” He quoted King Abdullah’s vision for the people of the entire planet. “We all are equal partners on this planet ... We need to cooperate to get the best for everybody.”

Visit by Doshisha President

 

On Sep. 26, President Hatta Eiji of Doshisha University led a delegation of 7 to visit Fudan University. Prof. Zhang Yihua, Executive Vice President, warmly welcomed them. As one of Fudan’s good partner school, Doshisha University will set up its Shanghai office at Fudan University.

 

Established in 1875, Doshisha University is located in the ancient city Kyoto. It is a famous comprehensive university in Japan. President Hatta said that Doshisha regarded Fudan as their important strategic partner. He also expressed the appreciation to the support from Fudan over the past years and hoped to deepen the exchange with our school.

 

Afterwards, the delegation led by President Hatta visited the new building of Center for Japanese studies and the Shanghai office of Doshisha University which is located in the new building. Prof. Guo Dingping, Director of Center for Japanese Studies attended the reception.

Visit by Tuebingen University President

 

Prof. Bernd Engler led a delegation to Fudan on September 27, 2010 and met with Fudan President Yang Yuliang. It was their second meeting after the Sino-German University Presidents Meeting in 2009 held in Tuebingen, at which time the two universities signed the cooperation agreement and started several student exchange programs. At this meeting, two Presidents agreed to further the relations and promote faculty exchange as well as to jointly hold academic workshops.

 

Together with Prof. Bernd Engler, Professor Dr. Heinz-Dieter Assmann, Vice President International, Professor Dr. Achim Mittag, Dean of Research Institute of Asia and Chinese Studies, Professor Dr. Thorsten Nuernberger, Vice Dean of Nature Science and Michael Gruenwaldt, Director of International Office also joined the meeting.
