Professor Hao Chuanming’s Paper Published on Clinical Investigation

Recently, internationally renowned Journal of Clinical Investigation Online published a paper by Professor Hao Chuanming of Huashan Hospital. The study found that a factor called silent information regulator (SIRT1) can protect the kidney from oxidative stress. SIRT1 is a histone deacetylase that can feel the energy level of cells and help cells resist external stress and improve metabolic function. Professor Hao Chuanming’s team found that the reduction of SIRT1 can increase oxidative stress through a series of exquisitely designed studied for vitro and vivo animals. There is a review by Professor Nath on the publication, in which he remarked that the study will benefit the majority of chronic kidney disease patients.

Research Results on “First Night Effect” Therapy Published

An important research achievement made by the research team led by Dr. Huang Zhili from Fudan University State Key Laboratory of Neurobiology was published in the latest issue of Journal of Neuroscience. The research result provides new thoughts and methods towards “the first night effect” by revealing that brain dopamine D2 receptor protein is an important receptor of awakening behavior, which enriches and develops the theories of sleeping and awakening conditioning system.

The medical term of “The First Night Effect” refers to the situation when the patient is not being able to fall asleep on a different bed. Records show that 1/3 of the population all over the world suffer from sleeping problems due to increasing industrialization, social competition, job pressure, unhealthy night life habits and aging problems. Many people are not used to sleeping on an unfamiliar bed during business trip, since they would become nervous or overexcited, which prevent them from sleeping well.

In many former researches, dopamine is generally recognized as a main element which controls physiological process of athletics, emotions, rewarding and recognition, and is closely related to addiction to medicine. However, it was rarely related to sleep conditions. Yet Dr. Huang Zhili and the team found that, compared with normal mice (wild-type mice), the mice with the deletion of the "dopamine D2 receptors" sleep more than before. In order to test "first night effect", the researchers created a new environment by changing the living environment of animals to study the sleep behaviors of the mice. The results showed that most normal mice have difficulties in getting used to the new environment while those with deletion of "dopamine D2 receptors" quickly fall asleep as usual. “Haibao” Robot Invented by Fudan to Greet Expo Guests

“Haibao” robot invented by Fudan Computer Science and Technology Department is going to stage in Shanghai Expo in April. This robot is 1.8 meter tall and weighs 100 kilograms. He is going to welcome all the guests in the “Shanghai Eco-House” in the Shanghai pavilion. He wears a black suit over his shining blue body and a red tie.

This robot is filled with LED and covered by an Acrylic layer that displays 3D effects rather than traditional graphic display. According to Associate Professor Zhang Wenqiang, a leading member in the invention team, this Haibao robot could show all kinds of virtual beautiful colors and patterns with the combination of the reality, realizing “change in no second.” For example, Haibao could change his facial expression, costumes, even roles according to the change of different occasions. Such delicate design is very unique in robot design field.

In Haibao’s “brain”, there stored hundreds of traditional costumes of different nations all over the world as well as the costumes of some movie characters such as superman or The Hillbilly Cat. The robot could recognize both Chinese and English languages and talk to guests bilingually. He is also capable of interactive communication with the visitors. He can even ask you “Where are you from?” If your answer is “Scotland,” the robot will change into Scottish kilt while playing Scottish pipe band music.

The robot “Haibao” has a “brain” which has cognitive capabilities. If you put a ball in front of Haibao and tell him what it is for a couple of times, the robot may recognize it. This kind of the experiment on a robot is the first in the world. In addition to this, “Haibao” could also take pictures for the guests. As soon as the pictures are taken, “Haibao” will show the picture in front of his chest, together with a lucky number, indicating you are the No.X guest of the day. Guests could take picture with “Haibao” who is wearing their picture, which will surely be an unforgettable memory.
