CONFERENCE
International Symposium on “CRO, CMO (Chinese pharmacy) Held in Medicine Valley

Co-hosted by Fudan School of Pharmacy and American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), International Symposium of “CRO, CMO (Chinese pharmacy) in the World” on CRO/CMO related pharmaceutical regulations, intellectual property, technology, ability and cooperation convened in Medicine Valley, Zhangjiang Science Park, Shanghai from April 2 to 4.
Mr. Liu Zhengyi, Vice Governor of Pudong New District, Shanghai, and Mr. Yi Chengdong, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Food and Drug Administration attended the symposium together with experts and scholars from US, Europe, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and some other Asian countries and regions who were engaged in medicine research and production and clinic pharmaceutical research and practice. Senior experts and administrators from American FDA, Chinese SF-DA, State Intellectual Property Office and other government sections were also invited to participate.
The Forum on East Asia Linkage 2007 Held at Fudan University
On April 7, the Forum on East Asia Linkage 2007 was Held at Guang Hua Building, Fudan University. The forum was jointly held by Fudan Law School, Osaka University, Konkuk University and Shanghai Law Society. The forum attracted high level professionals from banks, stock companies, group corporations and foreign investment banks.
The forum was focused on “Financial Market Opening and Risk Preventing”, and it set up three sub-panels on “The Tendency of Financial Freedom and Financial Market Enlargement”, “The Opening East Asian Financial Market” and “Preventing Financial Risk and Linkage”. Participants expressed their opinions on various topics freely on the forum and thus made the forum a good influence on improving the financial market and financial law making.
YOCSEF Shanghai Hosts Symposium on Internet and Information Security
YOCSEF (CCF Young Computer Scientists & Engineers Forum) Shanghai Session hosted the Symposium on Internet and Information Security on April 20th at Fudan University, exploring and discussing from research and application perspectives, topics of general interest.
Dr. Zhang Huaping, Associate Research Fellow from Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Niu Junyu and Dr. Zhao Yunlei from Fudan, and Mr. Tao Wenhe from Shanghai Yuanfang Computing Technology Co. Ltd delivered informative speeches on Internet Security and developing trends, real-time surveillance on Internet information, zero-knowledge proof system and performance management system of the public security bureau. The talks were well received by the forty participants and invited lively discussion on possible future collaboration.

China Scholarship Council To Sponsor 150 Fudan PhD Candidates Annually
According to the newly signed agreement between Fudan University and China Scholarship Council, 150 Ph.D. candidates from Fudan will be sponsored by the Council for studies abroad every year from 2007 to 2011. Forty-nine “985” universities including Fudan joined this state project jointly operated by Ministry of Education and China Scholarship Council. Altogether 5000 government-funded postgraduates will be sent abroad for research. For this year, over 100 applications were submitted to Fudan, most of which are applying for joint research programs and a few of which are for degree programs.
China Scholarship Council will cover the living expenses and travel cost of the candidates. This most generous project is expected to exert the most impact on the overall study-abroad plan.
Two Research Centers Established
Two research centers have been established in Fudan recently, namely Research Center for Game Theory and Quantitative Economics with Dr. Xie Shiyu as Director, and Securities Research Institute with Dr. Huang Yajun as Director. Both research centers are affiliating to Fudan School of Economics.
Nordic Literature Research Centre Established at Fudan
On 12 April, The Nordic Literature Research Centre was established at Fudan University in Shanghai, as the first research institute for Nordic literature studies launched in China. It aims to promote academic research in China and exchanges with Nordic universities in Nordic culture and literature studies.
Prof. Sun Jian, Chair of Department of English Language and Literature, Fudan College of Foreign Languages and Literature, was appointed Director of the Centre and chaired the opening ceremony.
Consul General of Norway Mr. Fred H. Nomme and Consul General of Sweden Mr. Lars Andreasson both gave a speech and presented gifts to the Centre. Dr. Joan Templeton, chairman of the International Ibsen Committee delivered an address while her colleagues Dr. Jon Nygaard and Dr. Frode Helland presented a lecture on “Ibsen in the World”. Performance of H. C. Andersen and Ibsen works by students from College of Foreign Languages and Literature were well received by the audience.
President Wang Shenghong Visits Members of Board of Trustees and Alumni in HK
During Mid-April, President Wang Shenghong and Vice President Xu Zheng visited some old and new members of Board of Trustees in Hong Kong, including Li Dak Sum, Chen Tseng Tao, Lui Che Woo, Choi Koon Shum, Tan Boye, Chen Shaoxiong, Kwok Ping Kwong Thomas, Alice LAM LEE Kiu-yue. President Wang Shenghong introduced the updates of Fudan and future plans for further development. Preparations for the first conference of the 4th Board of Trustees were also reported to the Board Members. During their stay in HK, President Wang Shenghong was also invited to HK Alumni Chapter.
Legal Service Agreement Signed between Fudan and PaulHastings
On the morning of April 25th, Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong and Mr. Seth Zachary, Global President of PaulHastings signed agreement of legal service for Fudan University Education Development Foundation, to kick off international operation and management of the foundation. Vice President Xu Zheng, Mr. Greg Nitzkowski, Head of PaulHastings Global Management, Mr. Simon Schuchat, Vice Consul General of US, Mr. Zhu Hongchao, Vice-President of All China Lawyers Association and students from Fduan Law School witnessed the signing.

Chinese Classics Selection by Four Fudan Professors
Written by Prof. Fu Jie, Prof. Xu Hongxing, Prof. Wang Yonghao and Prof. Chen Yinchi of Fudan University respectively, a series of four books on Chinese Classics, 100 Quotes from Confucianism, 100 Quotes from Mencius, 100 Quotes from Taoism, and 100 Quotes from Zhuangzi were published by Fudan University Press recently.
100 of the most philosophical and wise quotes were selected and presented to readers of modern times. Prof. Ge Zhaoguang, Dean of National Innovative Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies (IAHS) at Fudan wrote a preface to the series.
Prof. Ge Junbo Joining ACC Advisory Committee
The 56th Annual Meeting of American College of Cardiology (ACC) and Summit Conference of Interventional Cardiology was held in USA, which was the first international cardiology conference in 2007 and attracted 30, 000 scholars worldwide.
At the Annual Meeting, Prof. Ge Junbo from Fudan Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital was elected Member of ACC International Advisory Committee as the only Chinese member of the 30 cardiologist members from all over the world.
The mission of the American College of Cardiology is to advocate quality cardiovascular care through education, research, and application of standards and guidelines and to influence health care policy.
English-Chinese Dictionary (Second Edition) Published
In the English preface by Professor Lu Gusun for the dictionary, he commented on Samuel Johnson, tradition and novelty of lexicography in computer era, the qualifications of lexicographers, young people’s English and the importance of reading. The article has become another feature of the English-Chinese Dictionary (Second Edition).
The revision of the Dictionary started in 2001. Professor Lu Gusun as Editor-in-Chief of the first edition was again invited to head the team. The hard work lasted for 5 years. Mistakes and translation of proper nouns in the first edition were corrected, new English words, new meanings and usage added and the structure of the dictionary adjusted. In the afternoon of April 9th, experts, scholars and publication professionals joined in a conference for the publication of this dictionary in Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Yin Yicui, Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai and Wang Zhongwei, member of Standing Committee of CPC in Shanghai and Director of Shanghai Publicity Office, participated the conference and delivered speeches.
Dr. Xiang Junbo Invited As Guest Professor by Fudan University
On April 24, Dr. Xiang Junbo, Associate Director of The People’s Bank of China, was invited as Guest Professor during Fudan Economic Forum. Fudan President Wang Shenghong introduced to Fudan students and faculty the rich experience of Dr. Xiang Junbo before Dr. Xiang delivered a talk on “International Unbalance of Payment, Excess Liquidity and Related Issues”.
Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan Appointed Dean of Fudan Medical School
Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan, Professor of medical imaging and alumnus of Shanghai Medical University M.D. Class 1989, was appointed Dean of Fudan Medical School on April 25.
Prof. Feng has been committed in medical research and teaching in Shanghai Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, and is on the editorial boards of several journals on radiology. In recent years, he is author of over 30 published papers and co-author of 8 academic works. He was presented “Distinguished Contribution Award” in 1991, among many others.
CAS Academician He Jifeng Invited Faculty Member of Fudan
Dr. He Jifeng, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences jointed Fudan University as faculty member on April 26. Specialized in mathematical theory of programming, design techniques for hardware/software mixed systems, internet-based programming and design methods for object-oriented programs and component-based systems, Dr. He is senior research fellow of UNU-IIST and professor of computer science at Shanghai East China Normal University. He has been working at Oxford university computing laboratory during 1983 to 1998.
Dr. He expressed his commitment to promoting discipline development and teaching/research exchanges for School of Information Sciences and Engineering.
VISITOR
Visit by President of EM Lyon
On April 5, delegation from EM Lyon led by President Patrick Molle visited Fudan and met with Vice President of Fudan Dr. Xu Zheng and Professor Shi Lei, Associate Dean of School of Economics.
EM Lyon and the School of Economics of Fudan maintained good cooperative relations, and signed MOU for academic exchange and cooperation in 2006. Fudan Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng appreciated the cooperation between EM Lyon and Fudan School of Economics and expressed the wish to enhance the cooperation to a new height.
After the meeting, the EM Lyon delegation paid a visit to the new building of the School of Economics. Professor Xu Xiaoyin, Associate Dean of the School of Economics and Professor Shen Xiaoxiao, Associate Director of Foreign Affairs Office also attended the meeting.
Lecture by Dr. Allan Spradling
At the invitation of Dr. Xu Tian, Director of Fudan Institute of Developmental Biology and Molecular Medicine, Prof. Allan Spradling, Chairman of Genetics Society of America, visited Fudan University on April 10 and lectured on “Using Model Organisms to Study Human Bology”.
Dr. Spradling is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has received many honors for his work. He is interested in stem cells, egg development, and new technology for understanding how genes control tissue development and function.
Prof. Allan Spradling serves as the Director of Department of Embryology, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Investigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Adjunct Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Spradling earned his B.A. degree in physics from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. Degree in cell biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His postdoctoral study was accomplished at Indiana University with Anthony Mahowald.
Visit by Chia Tai Group Board Chair
On the morning of April 13, Mr Xie Guoming, Fudan University Board Member Honorary Doctor, Chia Tai Group Company Board Chair, and Mr. Xie Hanren, Vice Board Chair of Lotus Supermarket Group Company, visited Fudan University and were received by Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode at Chia Tai Stadium on campus. The visitors joined Fudan students and faculty to the Honorary Professorship Conferring Ceremony of HRH Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand at Fudan.
Chancellor Qin Shaode expressed his deep appreciation to Chia Tai Group which donated 30 million RMB to build the Chia Tai Stadium at Fudan in 2002. Jiang Peizheng, Director of Campus Construction Office introduced the construction and using process, the social influence of Chia Tai Stadium. Doctor Xie expressed his satisfaction after her introduction and expressed his willingness to continuously support the development of Fudan.
HRH Thai Princess Sirindhorn Conferred Honorary Professor at Fudan
On the morning of April 13, Fudan President Wang Shenghong conferred the Honorary Professorship on HRH Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand before Prof. Sirindhorn addressed the audience in Chinese and commented that “Chinese people and Thai People have a lot in common in heritance, and I will treasure this and contribute my own efforts to promote various exchange in technology, culture and education”. Princess Sirindhorn expressed her willingness to establish a good cooperation relationship between Thai universities and Fudan University.
After the conferring ceremony, Princess Sirindhorn visited Fudan Bio-diversity Laboratory and expressed keen interest in transfer-gene technology and bio-diversity.
Fudan and Keio Celebrates the 35th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-Japan Friendly Relation
On the afternoon of April 14, Mita Kai of Keio University and Japanese Studies Center of Fudan University jointly held the Cherry Blossom Appreciation Activity to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-Japan Friendly Relation at Jiang Wan Campus of Fudan University.
President Wang Shenghong and Japanese Consul General at Shanghai, Mr. Yuji Kumamaru attended the activity and delivered a speech. Both parties appreciated the event and especially its timing of right after Premier Wen Jiabao’s successful visit to Japan.
Keio University and Fudan University enjoys good cooperation relationship for long. Every year, the two universities exchange dozens of visiting scholars and students. Mita Kai is the alumni organization of Keio University at Shanghai and has 300 members now.
Visit by Georgetown University Delegation
On April 19, Fudan Vice President Professor Gui Yonghao received a delegation from Georgetown University (GTU) led by Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Mr. Augostini.
Based on the friendly relationship already existent, the GTU delegation this time came to discuss the strategic relationship with Fudan and to study the possibility of collaboration in law, medicine, journalism and library.
Since GTU and Fudan University signed an agreement, the two universities have developed cooperation at many levels. This year, GTU has offered Fudan three scholarships for the joint post-doctoral program.
Dr. Zhu Chouwen, Associate Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Associate Professor Wang Ying, Vice Dean of the Undergraduate Student Programs, Mr. Lin Xuelei, Dean of the Financial Office, Associate Professor Zhang Jin, Vice Dean of the Human Resources Office and Professor Zhang Guanjie, Vice Dean of the Law School, joined the meeting as well.
Visit by Former Justice Minister of Germany
On April 20, Dr. Herta Daeubler-Gmelin, MP of German Federal Parliament and former German Justice Minister, lectured at School of Economics Fudan University to an audience of 60 faculty and students from the School and Fudan Law School.
The lecture, “The law of Consumer Protection and Policies of Consumer Protection”, was chaired by Prof. Ding Chun, Executive Vice Director of the Center for European Studies. After the lecture, Dr. Gmelin held in-depth discussions with Fudan teachers and students on topics of Sino-German relations and European integration. Her speech drew warm applause from Fudan teachers and students.
Before the lecture, Prof. Liu Jianzhong, Vice President of Fudan University, met Dr. Herta Daeubler-Gmelin and the rest of the German delegation members. Also present were Prof. Ren Xiao, Deputy Dean of Institute of International Studies, Prof. Chen Yugang of International Politics Department and Prof. Lu Zhi’an of Fudan Law School.
Visit by French Ambassador in China
On April 21, the newly appointed French Ambassador in China Mr. Hervé LADSOUS visited Fudan after his meeting with Mayor of Shanghai Mr. Han Zheng.
Mr. Hervé LADSOUS and his delegation were warmly received by Fudan Chancellor Professor Qin Shaode, together with other representatives from Fudan including senior Professor Jin Zhongyuan of History Department, Chair of French Language Department Professor Chen Liangming, Chair of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature Professor Chen Sihe, Professor Zhu Jing of the French Language Department etc.
Chancellor Qin Shaode expressed his warm welcome to Mr. Hervé LADSOUS for his first visit to Fudan after assuming office, and introduced the latest development of Fudan. Mr. Hervé LADSOUS, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude for the hospitality he received at Fudan, and promised to continue the efforts to enhance the cooperation with Fudan University in various fields.
Visit by EPFL and University of Suez
On April 26, the joint delegation of EPFL and University of Suez visited Fudan and was received by Vice President of Fudan Dr. Xu Zheng. President of EPFL Professor Patrick Aebischer, Vice President of EPFL Professor Martin Vetterli, President Representative of the University of Suez Professor Heinz Berke and Head of International Relations of the University of Suez were attending the meeting as well. On Fudan side, Chair of the Chemistry Department Professor Tang Yi, Deputy Director of the Center for European Studies Professor Ding Chun, Associate Director of the Foreign Affairs Office Dr. Zhu Chouwen also attended the meeting.
Vice President Xu Zheng signed MOU with EPFL as Fudan representative witnessesed the document exchange ceremony between the Chemistry Department of Fudan with the University of Zurich.
Visit by Former German President Mr. Roman Herzog
On April 27, former German President Mr. Roman Herzog visited Fudan University and delivered a keynote speech on Ambassador Forum to 200 faculty and students from Center for European Studies, Fudan Law School, Department of German Language and Literature and School of Economics. In his address “The Main Problems of Law Policy in Europe”, Mr. Roman Herzog reviewed the history of unification of Europe, and commented on the different roles law policies played at the various stages of European integration. In particular, Mr. Roman Herzog stressed the important political significance of law polices in the ongoing process of European Integration. Questions regarding European Constitution, antitrust law and intellectual property were answered by Mr. Herzog after the speech.
Before Mr. Herzog delivered his address, Prof. Wang Shenghong presented Letter of Appointment to Prof MEI Zhaorong to renew his professorship at Fudan. President Wang Shenghong highly praised Prof. Mei Zhaorong for his excellent work as President of Academic Steering Committee of the Center for European Studies and the Ambassador Forum Chair of Fudan University.
Mr. Albrecht von der Heyden, German Consul General in Shanghai, received Mr. Roman Herzog together with Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong, Vice President Prof. Yan Shuang, and Prof. Mei Zhaorong. Also present were Prof. Fang Jinggang, Director of Department for Humanities Studies, Prof. Shi Lei, Associate Dean of School of Economics, Prof. Wei Yuqing, Director of Department of German Language and Literature, and Prof. Ding Chun, Executive Vice Director of the Center for European Studies.
Nobel Prize Winner TANAKA Koichi Visiting Proteomics Laboratory at Fudan University
Professor TANAKA Koichi, Famous Japanese Scholar and Nobel Chemistry Prize Winner of 2002 visited Biomedicine Institute as well as Proteomics Laboratory at Fudan University on the morning of April 23. This was his second visit to the lab.
TANAKA Koichi, Nobel Chemistry Prize Winner of 2002, is now working at Shimadzu Corporation as a R&D engineer. He won the Nobel Prize for his study of methods for identification and structure analyses of biological macromolecules.
