U21:Connect contains the latest news and items of interest
to staff and students across the Universitas 21 network.
U21 Institutions Ride High in 2017/18 QS World University Rankings

In the recent QS World University Rankings, twenty-one (84%) of our twenty-five U21 member institutions appear in the World's Top 200 Universities.  Seven (28%) members are in the World's Top 50 Universities in this latest rankings index, nine more (40%) are in the 51-100 band and a further 4 (16%) are in the 101-200 band.

U21 kicks off Student #GlobalMobility Month in June!

Students from 21 member universities across the Universitas 21 network will be coming together and Going Global in June and July 2017 to participate in a diverse range of activities at the Universities of Edinburgh and Johannesburg and off-site in Ecuador. All of these events allow U21 students from across the world to join together to work, share ideas and socialise together thereby creating understanding, new knowledge and friendship across borders.

As part of our U21Student #GlobalMobility month, the University of Edinburgh will host the
Undergraduate Research Conference on the topic of '
Future Societies, Global Citizens'; U21 undergraduate students will be attending the University of Johannesburg Summer School on 'Fabricating Design Spaces'; students will also be in Johannesburg for their Health Sciences Summer School on 'Global Health and Social Determinants of Health'  and students will also travel to Ecuador for the Social Entrepreneur Corps. Happy, fun and safe travels to all!!

  

The Times Higher's first Teaching Excellence Summit, due to be held 10 - 12 July 2018, has a very strong U21 presence.  As well as being hosted at the University of Glasgow, it will also feature headline speakers from the Universities of Edinburgh, British Columbia and Nottingham. Topics covered at the event include evolution of the teaching model, digital innovation in teaching, developing excellence through active learning, global variations in approaches to teaching and measuring learning gain.

U21's Educational Innovation Cluster Lead, Professor Simon Bates, director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at the University of British Columbia, and Professor Siân Bayne, assistant principal of digital education at the University of Edinburgh will speak at the event. Incoming University of Nottingham Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West, will also be a key contributor.

Glasgow Principal Knighted in Queens Birthday Honours

The principal of Glasgow has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Professor Anton Muscatelli is recognised for his services to economics and higher education, alongside two other honours recipients from the University of Glasgow.

He said: "I am also pleased, and proud, as someone who came to the UK from abroad and who believes that science and knowledge transcends national boundaries and borders that this honour has been bestowed upon me."

  

University of Nottingham President Honoured

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Professor Sir David Greenaway, has been honoured by the University of Western Ontario.

The former Chair of the U21 network was conferred with an
Honorary Doctor of Laws during Spring Convocation at the university in Canada

  

Fudan appoint new Senior Leader and Director of FAO

Professor Wen CHEN has taken up the position Director of Foreign Office Affairs at Fudan University and will assume the role of U21 Senior Leader, assisted by Ms Ann Wenqing TANG and Ms. Gloria ZHAO.

Professor CHEN replaces Dr. Zhu who has joined Zhong Shan Hospital of Fudan.
