Abstract

Liberal arts is often misunderstood to mean arts and humanities education. While it includes those areas, it also includes social sciences and sciences. The idea of a liberal arts education is a student-focused and holistic educational experience, with great attention paid to individual student needs by professors and instructors. This talk will discuss the liberal arts experience and will reference Dr. Field's own undergraduate educational experience at Dartmouth College as an example. He will also discuss how Duke Kunshan is attempting to reinvent the liberal arts experience for the 21st century and create a liberal arts learning environment in China.
