A Breakthrough Made by Huashan Hospital in Vitiligo Surgery

On March 6th, 2 skin surgeries aiming at treating patients with vitiligo in a large area named “skin grafting after autologous skin cell cultivation” were carried out by Dermatology Department, Fudan Huashan Hospital. As a national level innovation, this surgery is a great breakthrough in treating vitiligo.

As a chronic skin disease which affects appearance, vitiligo is difficult to cure, and thus requires long-term therapy. Present methods to treat patient with vitiligo, such as autologous epidermal grafting, full-thickness skin grafting, split-thickness skin grafting and microporous grafting, have a high requirement on patient’s skin donor sites. The present surgeries don’t suit those patients who can’t provide sufficient healthy skin. Besides, patients treated by traditional ways have to endure several successive operations and suffer uneven skin color after grafting.

Cooperating with Japanese National Research Institute for Child Health and Development, Dermatology Department of Huashan Hospital initiated clinical and laboratorial researches which focus on using skin grafting after autologous skin cell cultivation to treat patients with stable vitiligo. Study shows that relative small healthy skin can be used to treat large white skin patch without causing rejection. Compared with traditional methods, the clinical application of co-cultivating keratinocyte and melancyte in forming epidermal slices can achieve better effects and have better prospects. This new method of skin grafting brings hope for numerous patients with vitiligo.

A New Fudan Finding: Cell Transplantation Brings Hope for Curing HD

After five years of research, Ma Lixiang, a young faculty member from Fudan University Shanghai Medical School found that Huntington’s disease (HD) may be treated through cell transplantation. The result of the research was published on Cell Stem Cell recently.

Degeneration of medium spiny GABA neurons in the basal ganglia underlies motor dysfunction in Huntington’s disease (HD) which presently lacks effective therapy. In this study, Ma Lixiang successfully directed human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to enriched populations of DARPP32-expressing forebrain GABA neurons. Transplantation of these human forebrain GABA neurons and their progenitors, but not spinal GABA cells, into the striatum of quinolinic acid-lesioned mice results in generation of large populations of DARPP32+ GABA neurons, which project to the substantia nigra as well as receiving glutamatergic and dopaminergic inputs, corresponding to correction of motor deficits. This finding raises hopes for cell therapy for HD.
