Fudan Gains an Overwhelming Victory at the National Men's Volleyball Championship (League B)

After defeated Henan Youth Volleyball Team three-nil, Fudan Men's Volleyball Team have done marvellous performance without one point lost in the overall six matches in the National Men's Volleyball Championship(league B) ended recently.

Fudan Men's Volleyball Team started their journey towards Zhangzhou, Fujian on December 26th, 2011. Considering 2012 as an Olympic year, the organizing committee shortened the schedule, and changed the tournament system. Also in order to train the talents, the top three teams in the National Youth Volleyball Championship were allowed to join the game too. Zhangzhou, "the Cradle of Chinese women volleyball players" was chosen as the site for this championship.

The first match was on December 29th with Hubei volleyball team, the one that had lots of experience in League A. In face of such a formidable opponent, Fudan players showed no fear. On the contrary, they played very well at the beginning, their effective attack and perfect defence helped them to take a lead with the score of two-nil. However, as an experienced team, after making a timely change on tactics, Hubei team regained their momentum and dragged the match to the decider with the score of two draw. In the fifth set, our players gave their opponents no opportunity. They launched initiative attacks, carried out well-arranged tactics and eventually beat the Hubei team won the match unexpectedly by three-two.

The second match was on the next day with the team from Tianjin Polytechnic University. At the beginning, our team's repeated faults caused either by poor first pass or failed attacks gave Tianjin team the opportunity of entering the third set with two-nil. In such a critical moment, our captain Liuting boosted the morale of the whole team by his quick kill and effective spikes. The lost initiative was then recovered in the process of our players' perfect attack, defence and service reception. The second victory was achieved with the score of three-two.

The third opponent is the team from Beihang University. Both teams made great efforts and were neck and neck in the first two sets. The third set began with a draw, and ended two-one with Beihang team's lead which owned to the skilled floating service from their captain. After changing ends, the coach on our side made a strategic shift which was then carried out in to full play through the excellent performance in both defense and blocking given by our players. Be well-cooperated and unassailable, our team ended the fifth set by a lopsided score.

What is worth mentioning is that the championship happened to be held the same time with the final examination of our school. Therefore, it's commendable that our players did such a good job under the academic stress.

Research Result Achieved by Prof. Ma Lan Selected Top 10 Science and Technology Progress 2011

China’s top ten science and technology progresses for the year 2011 were selected by academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering. A research result achieved by Prof. Ma Lan from Institutes of Brain Science, Fudan University and her team ranks the fifth. It was also selected as one of Shanghai’s top ten science and technology progress in 2011.

After more than three years of study, the research team led by Ma Lan at Fudan University’s Institute of Brain Science recently found that the GRK5, a G protein-coupled receptor kinase widely distributed in human body, plays a crucial role in neural development.

One end of the GRK5 can be integrated into the brain's cytoskeleton and reframe the cytoskeleton. The other end of the GRK5 can connect the PIP2, a minor phospholipid component of membranes of neurons in the brain and then lead the reframed cytoskeleton to PIP2-rich cell membranes.

In this way, it can mediate the reframing of cytoskeleton dynamics and membranes and promote positive changes to neurons and the formation of neural connections. Related rat experiments have shown that the lack of GRK5 can cause abnormal neuronal development, cognitive defects as well as weakened memory and learning abilities.

The finding was recently published in the world-renowned Journal of Cell Science and the article was selected for "will read" papers by international medical and biological papers evaluation system "Faculty of 1000".
