COOPERATION

WHO and Fudan Huashan Hospital Jointly Established Center for Health Education

On the World Psoriasis Day Oct. 29, World Health Organization (WHO) Shanghai Center for Cooperation in Health Education and Promotion (SCCHE) and Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University jointly established the so-calledWHO-SCCHE Center for Dermal Health Education, aiming at promoting the long-term and standardized mechanism of communal education in dermal health. It was stated thatto introduce education in dermal health to the communityhas been an international consensus. People from both sides and Health Bureau of Shanghai Municipality attended the gathering.

The center will strengthen the contact and cooperation between hospitals and communities, and publicize information concerning dermal diseases with the help of various sides. Through these communications, the residents are exposed to knowledge of dermal diseases and face them, so that they can avoid possible inducing elements in daily life.

According to some specialists, psoriasis is regarded mostly as a chronic dermal disease; however, it is not only such a kind of disease, but also one that is systematically detrimental to human health. A patient of psoriasis has higher risk of suffering from hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart and blood vessel diseases, arthritis, and so on. Presently there are 6.5 million patients of dermal diseases, and the number is still increasing. Based on a sample conducted by Huashan Hospital, 46.63% Shanghai citizens have certain dermal diseases, while 60.96% of them choose not to see a doctor due to lack of information or fear for trouble. Consequently, many cases are delayed and thus deteriorated; some even evolves into fatal diseases.

Huashan Hospital has been sparing no efforts in treating dermal diseases. The number of dermal diseases patients it takes every year ranks first in the world. Faced with this large group of patients, Huashan not only manages to fulfill treatment, but also takes prevention as its task. This cooperation suggests the common target to attain healthy shared by the two institutes.

Fudan Medical School Made Progress in The First Chinese Clinical Vaccine for Hepatitis

In collaboration with Bejing Institute of Biological Products, the Lab of Molecular Virus of Fudan University Shanghai Medical School successfully finished recently part III of the first phase of clinical test for Yike, the name for the first Chinese clinical hepatitis vaccine. This is one of the key scientific projects on the state level.

The clinical test was conducted in 21 national institutes for medical research, strictly according to international criteria. Most of the indexes in the test suggest obvious alleviation of symptom.

The mutation of HBeAg antigen to antibody is internationally adopted as the most reliable index of successful treatment. Till now there have been 518 hepatitis patients who participated in the test since September 2007. During part III and the latter section of part II of the first phase, the mutation rate of HBeAg antigen in those patients involved in the test was higher than those who were not. Nevertheless, the efficacy the Dingke is still to been confirmed with a larger number of samples.

In so far as it is an important project that is closely related to people’s life, the research on Dingke will be sponsored further by “1025” planning. The team involved will design and conduct the three parts of second phase of the test.

Paper from Fudan Department of Environmental Science Selected by Atmospheric Environment as 10 Most Cited

The paper written by Prof. Zhuang Guoshuns Research Group of Environment Department, The ion chemistry, seasonal cycle, and sources of PM2.5 and TSP aerosol in Shanghai is the only paper in mainlandChina that is selected by Atmospheric Environment as 10 Most Cited papers in the past 5 years. Atmospheric Environment is a world famous academic magazine in the area of atmospheric environment research. In Zhuangs paper, it demonstrated in details the sources, formation mechanisms and ion chemistry of air pollution in Shanghai, one of China's biggest cities, revealing that vehicle exhaust, the dust and biomass burning in long-distance transmission is a major source of air pollution in the coastal cities of China, which provides an important basis for the study of the emergence of serious haze all over the country and is the widely cited and highly acknowledged.

Since 2004 when Zhuangs group joined Fudan University, they have done in-depth systematic research in the field of air quality and global change, especially made a series of excellent results in the Asian dust and haze-related studies in China. The group has published 83 SCI papers, which includes 43 I or II zone papers, they were cited 2500 times in total. Single articles are cited up to 256 times, and the other five articles more than 100 times. These data reflected our considerable progress in the research fields of atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric environment and global change in recent years.

Recently, Zhuangs group and colleagues in the department work together to create a Research Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry and Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory, formed a frontier research team in the field of aerosol science. Prof. Zhuang hosted a total of 7 national research projects, 5 provincial-level projects, 2 international cooperation projects and received more than 900 million RMB of funding.

Great Breakthrough Made on Diagnosis of Liver Cancer by Zhongshan Hospital

The research team led by Professor Fan Jia from the Institute of Liver Cancer, Zhongshan Hospital, has made great progress in the area of liver cancer. The research result has been published onJournal of Clinical Oncologyrecently, the most notable journal in the field of Clinical Oncology with an impact factor of 18.97 and was highly rated.

Liver cancer ranks the first in all cancers in terms of its high degree of malignancy, with a high incidence that accounts for nearly 50% new cases and deaths in the whole world. The onset of liver cancer is occult; more than 60%patients have entered into the middle-late period when first diagnosed. The 5-year survival rate of the liver cancer only amounts to around 7%

For decades, the most widely used biochemical blood test for diagnosis of liver cancer has been α-fetoprotein (AFP). But AFP couldnt be regarded as a true biomarker because of its low sensitivity and specificity and the index is often increased for reasons other than liver cancer, including liver injury, pregnancy or cancer in other organs. Therefore, finding a sensitive and specific biomarker for liver cancer becomes the key and difficult point in the current research. After three years of efforts made by the Institute of Liver Cancer, Zhongshan Hospital and the Department of Pathology, Shanghai Medical College, the molecular biomarker for early diagnosis consisted of seven micro RNAs in blood plasma was selected, aiming at detecting the tumor which is below 2cm. The diagnostic accuracy is approximately 90%.

As we all know, liver cancer in our country mostly stem from hepatitis and cirrhosis. The research team started with a cohort study, using healthy people and patients with hepatitis and cirrhosis as the groups of control. In this way, the selected micro-RNAs can distinguish liver caner patients from other people in control groups. Furthermore, as a complex disease influenced by multi-factor and multi-gene, this model can enhance the efficiency of diagnosis.

According to Prof. Fan Jia, the detection of micro RNAs in blood plasma has many advantages in clinic: stability, convenienceless injury, low requirement for detection technique and low cost. Therefore, it is easy to popularize the outcome, and thus to win golden time for effective treatment and improving the survival rate of liver cancer patients on the whole. With this new technique that is about to initiate a new phrase for early detection of liver cancer, Zhongshan Hospital is applying for patent in China, Japan, USA and UN.
