Fudan University Reformed the Admission Criterion

Fudan University plans to enroll 300 local high school graduates this year based on interviews instead of their scores on a single entrance examination. The reform scheme was designed to make up for defects in the country’s existing higher education admission.

Qualified Students who are interested in the newly admission measure may apply online through www.ao.fudan.edu.cn for the application test. The test covers ten subjects including Chinese, Mathematics, English, Politics, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. The top 1200 students of the application test may enter the next paper test step of the admission criterion. Fudan held its own paper test on March 19 and then held the interview in early April. The interview step is the most important factor in this new admission criterion. 150 Professors interviewed 1200 students and each student was interviewed by 5 Professors.

In 2003, the Ministry of Education started to reform college admission systems. Presently, 53 universities in China are allowed to recruit students by their own standards, rather than by the national college entrance examination. But almost all these universities asked their candidates to take various written tests. Fudan and Jiaotong universities, however, improved their admission methods in a more controversial way. In order to ensure fairness, a group of teachers was selected randomly for each student. And all the interviews were recorded. The final result of this year’s admission was already made public in April.
