Sciences Po-LSE-Fudan Joint Conference on “Public Opinion and Foreign Policy”

 

Sciences Po, LSE and Fduan School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) jointly held an International Conference on “Public Opinion and Foreign Policy” on October 6 and 7 at Sciences Po, Paris.

 

Professor Chen Zhimin, Professor Guo Dingping and Professor Jiang Changjian from SIRPA presented their papers at the conference and enjoyed in-depth discussions with other scholars on definitions and characteristics of public opinion, the role of public opinion in foreign policy making process and the influence of public opinion on Sino-American, Sino-Japanese, Sino-African and Sino-Indian relations.

 

This international conference is one that will be rotated and hosted by the three universities annually. Fudan held the first in Shanghai last year and LSE will be the next host for next year in London .

Shanghai Biomedical Master Forum Opened

 

On October 12, Shanghai Biomedical Master Forum 2006 was held in Fudan Fenglin Medical Campus, co-organized by Fudan Biomedical Research Institute, Shanghai Life Sciences Institute of National Sciences Institute and National Southern Gene Center.

 

World renowned scholars attending this Forum included Prof. Timothy Hunt (UK), 2001 Nobel Laureate of Biomedicine; Prof. Koichi Tanaka ( Japan ); 2002 Nobel Laureate of Chemistry, Prof. Robert Roeder from American Academy of Science (AAS), Prof. Jack Dixon and Prof. Lewis Cantley, also from AAS; and Prof. Stefan Jentsch, German Academician. Five of them received Honorary Fudan Professorship on the previous day.

East Asian Political Scholars gathered at Fudan to explore the Asian Politics Development Experience

 

On October 21-22, Fudan University held an international symposium on “Culture and Democracy: A Comparison of East Asian Development Experience”. Political scholars from Japan , Korea , Singapore , Australia , Mainland China , Hong Kong and Taiwan gave analysis and discussion from both theory and practice, on the basis of East Asian Political development after the 1980s.

 

This symposium was sponsored by School of International Relations and Public Affairs, and supported by Center for Japanese Studies and Asian Consortium for Political Research (ACPR). The famous scholar, President of ACPR Takashi Inoguchi, and other influential scholars from Seoul National University , Tokyo University , Hong Kong University , The National University of Singapore, Peking University , Nankai University and Xiamen University attended the symposium and presented their papers.

 

The symposium gave a deep discussion and analysis on the relationship between culture and democracy, cultural tradition and democratic transformation in different East Asian countries, the difference and similarity between East Asian politics and Latin American democratic politics.

The 2 nd China Young Philosophers Forum held at Fudan

 

On the occasion of Fudan Philosophy Department’s 50th anniversary, the 2 nd

China Young Philosophers Forum on “The Development and Outlook of Chinese Philosophy in 21 st Century” was hosted at Fudan on October 25, which created a valuable opportunities to Chinese philosophers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao to communicate.

 

Having suffered from nearly two hundred years of poverty and backwardness, China is now faced with unprecedented development opportunities. The current time presents itself as a key stage of reflecting on and re-evaluation of the contribution by traditional culture and Chinese philosophy to both Chinese’s prosperity and the harmony of the world as a whole. This forum is regarded not only an opportunity for academic dialogue and exchanges but for a larger and clearer picture of current trends.

 

Prof. Tong Shijun, Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Social Science, Prof. Ge Zhaoguang, a most renowned scholar in philosophy, and Prof. Li Jianqiu, President of Fun Jen Catholic University were present.

Int’l Workshop on Clinical Pharmacy held in Zhangjiang Campus

 

On the occasion of its 70-year anniversary, Fudan School of Pharmacy hosted an International Workshop on Clinical Pharmacy on clinical pharmacy, medicine supervision and test, clinical research of new medicine, and cultivation of clinical medical talents on Fudan Zhangjiang Campus on October 25.

 

Over 350 scholars and representatives joined the workshop, including Academician Prof. Zhang Lihe from Peking University, Mr. Li Dakui, Vice Chair of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, Director Wu Yongpei, Hospital Administration Institute of Ministry of Sanitation, Prof. Zhang Juntian, Honorary Chair of Chinese Pharmacologic Society, and Dr. Oscar L. Laskin, Vice President of Celgene Co.

Fudan-Washington U in St. Louis EMBA Ranked 8th by London Finance Times

 

On October 23, London Finance Times published its annual worldwide EMBA ranking in which Fudan-- Washington University in St. Louis (Fudan-WUSL) joint EMBA program stood 8 th . This was the first time that this program was included in the ranking and also the first time that a China-based program was ranked as TOP ten worldwide. As one of the earliest EMBA programs in China that were joined by a foreign partner, Fudan-WUSL EMBA was launched in 2002 and admits only the TOP level administrative from major multinational enterprises.

Professor Lu Xiongwen, Dean of Fudan School of Management, commented that the winning program excels in student resources and faculty qualifications, distinctive and effective curriculum design, the unique co-teaching pattern, and the strong team spirit between Fudan and WUSL.

 

Dean Lu Xiongwen concluded that the latest ranking of the Fudan University-Washington University EMBA program was affirmation of their student quality and teaching quality, meanwhile it let them bear higher expectations and urged them to pursue a higher goal.

Fudan Sent its Medical Team to Morocco

 

In the night of October 5, eight medical doctors from Fudan affiliating hospitals arrived in Al Heceima, Morocco as the 6 th team sent by Chinese government to the Hospital of Mohammed V , Morocco , since November 1994. The eight doctors are Dr. Yang Zi’ang, surgeon, and Dr. Zhang Yuemei, heart physician, from Zhongshan Hospital , Dr. Bao Genxi, orthopedist, and Dr. Fang Fang. gynecologist, from Huashan Hospital, Dr. Min Ruoliang, pediatrician, from Children’s Hospital, Dr. Song Yuelian, ophthalmologist, and Dr. Yuan Yasheng, EENT physician, from EENT Hospital, and Dr. Ke Yihua, anesthetist, from Cancer Hospital.

Unveiling of Relievo of 7 Academicians in Biomedicine

 

Relievo dedicated to 7 academicians of biomedicine was unveiled on Oct 11 in Fudan Fenglin Medical Campus. The 7 academicians are: Tan Jiazhen, founder of Modern Genetics in China , Chen Haozhun, cardiologist, Tang Zhaoyou, liver cancer expert, Wen Yumei, microbiologist, Wang Zhengmin, otolaryngologist, Lin Guoqiang, organic chemist, and He Fuchu, bio-medicine scientist. Being the most authoritative figures in their respective fields, they are the most respected scientists in the academia for their scholastic integrity as well as the impact they have over the course of biomedical development in China .

Students Science & Innovation Park of Fudan Medical School Launched

 

In the evening of October 17, the unveiling ceremony of “Students Science & Innovation Park of Fudan Medical School” was held in Fudan Fenglin Medical Campus, which is a part of the 11 th Five Year Plan Project with an annual sponsorship of CNY 100,000 to undergraduates for scientific research. One of the primary objectives of the project is to promote the comprehensive medical education and to cultivate leadership among Fudan medical students.

 

All medical students in their second to fourth year can apply for the sponsorship as long as they are teamed with an academic advisor. Abundant opportunities for exchanges as well as generous research resources will be granted to the winner applicants.

The First Management Science Award Held at Fudan

 

On October 18, the first Management Science Award sponsored by Fudan Management Science Foundation (FMSF) was presented to Dr. Chen Xikang, researcher of Institute of Systematic Science , Chinese Academy of Mathematics, Prof. Zhu Daoli, Fudan Management School , and Prof. Chen Jian, School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University. A total award of CNY 800,000 will be shared by the three awardees.

 

Mr. Li Lanqing, Fudan alumnus, former Member of the Standing Committee of CPPB (Communist Party Political Bureau), former Vice Premier and Chair of FMSF, Madam Chen Zhili, Member of the State Council, Prof. Wang Shenghong, President of Fudan University and Director of FMSF , Prof. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University and Deputy Director of FMSF, attended the event together with deans of management schools of other Chinese universities and representatives from research institutions and enterprises. Dr. Long Yongtu, Dean of Fudan School of International Relations and Public Affairs, and Secretary General of FMSF presided over the event.

Fudan Management Science Foundation was founded by Mr. Li Lanqing in 2005 when Fudan celebrated her Centennial. The initial funds yielded from profits of two books published by Mr. Li— Interview of Li Lanqing on Education and Collective Essays on Music by Li Lanqing. This foundation, as the very first of its nature, aims to foster the development of the management science in China , nurture talents in this field, and help to adapt management science to particular Chinese contexts. The launch of the foundation was widely echoed by donations from both home and overseas. The annual award from FMSF covers three major areas, namely management science, business administration and public administration. Award 2006 was presented to the best studies in management science while Award 2007 will be presented to those in business administration.

On October 25, Fudan held a ceremony to honor the donators from five enterprises, namely Toshiba Electronics Management (China) Co., Ltd, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Asia Ltd, Shanghai 100 Horse Real Estate Consultant Co., Ltd, Shanghai Johnson Controls, Inc. and Zhuzhou Qianjin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, in recognition of their total contribution of CNY 1.2 million for scholarship to students and fellowship to faculty. Fudan Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng chaired the ceremony and expressed her appreciation to the business sections on behalf of the university.

Visit by Secretary of Germany Health Ministry

 

At the joint invitation of the Centre for European Studies at Fudan University and Shanghai Office of German Albert Foundation, Marion Caspers-Merk, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Health of Germany , visited Fudan University on 9 October, and was received by Prof. Wang Weiping, Executive Vice President of Fudan University .

 

In her later talk to Fudan students, Caspers-Merk introduced German health care system and its reform in progress, which was addressed to the great interest of the audience. Many a question was raised and responded by the welcome speaker.

 

The event was co-organized by the Center for European Studies at Fudan University (CES) and the Shanghai Office of German Albert Foundation. Prof. Ding Chun, Executive Vice Director of CES, Chaired the event. Around 100 students and scholars from Fudan University and other institutes of higher learning in Shanghai attended the talk.

Visit by Rector of Helsinki School of Economics

 

Rector of Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), Prof. Eero O. Kasanen paid an official visit to Fudan on October 11, accompanied with Ms. Malla Paajanen, Director of HSE International Relations. Fudan President Prof. Wang Shenghong received the guests and both parties found common interest for cooperation in management. Rector Kasanen also held an in-depth discussion with Prof. LU Xiongwen, Dean of Fudan School of Management, on the feasibility of further cooperation in near future. It was agreed that the collaboration between HSE and Fudan School of Management will start with student and faculty exchange, joint research project and feasibility of new models of cooperation.

 

Helsinki School of Economics is the biggest business school in Finland and is also a member of the Nordic Centre at Fudan University .

UCD Delegation Visited Fudan

 

On October 13, 2006 , a delegation led by Professor Nick Quirke, Vice President for Foreign Affairs of University College Dublin Ireland visited Fudan and met with Fudan Vice President Dr. Xu Zheng. The two leaders exchanged ideas on further promoting the cooperative relation UCD and Fudan had shared.

 

After the meeting, the delegation made a visit to Zhangjiang Campus of Fudan and had lunch with students in the UCD-Fudan Joint Degree Program on Software Engineering. There Professor Zang Binyu, Dean of the School of Software Engineering , held further talks with the Irish guests on the improvement of the joint program.

Visit by Mexican Governor Jose Natividad Gonzalez Paras

 

On October 17, Governor Jose Natividad Gonzalez Paras of the Neuvo Leon State of Mexico paid a visit to Fudan with his delegation, in which Presidents of Monterrey Technology Institute and University Autonomous of Neuvo Leon (UANL) were included. President Prof. Wang Shenghong introduced Monterrey Technology Institute’s cooperation with Fudan School of Economics to Governor, who later witnessed signing of bilateral agreements between Fudan-Monterry and Fudan-UANL.

Former Germany President Visited Fudan

Dr. Richard von Weizsacker, former President of Germany, visited Fudan on October 20. Prof. Wang Shenghong, President of Fudan University and Prof. Yan Shuang, Fudan Vice President for humanities received the guest and had brief discussion on higher education, scientific researches and other subjects of mutual interest.

Following the opening address by Vice President Yan Shuang for Fudan Ambassador Forum, Dr. Richard von Weizsacker delivered a public speech entitled “ Europe and China: The Common Interests and Responsibilities in Globalization ” in the keynote session chaired by Prof. Mei Zhaorong, Former Chinese Ambassador to Germany . Challenges that both China and EU are confronted with in the progress of globalization were addressed by Dr. Richard von Weizsacker, who also offered to share opinions and comment on this issues concerned with some 300 audience. Q & A session with Fudan students and faculty followed the talk. Dr. Richard von Weizsacker concluded his visit by leaving his inscription in the Fudan Visitor’s Book.

Fudan Ambassador Forum is co-sponsored by the Center for European Studies and School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University . Since April 2004, quite a number of leading political figures including former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt have been invited to speak at the Forum.

Belgian Higher Education Delegation Visited Fudan

 

On October 25, a Belgian delegation of higher education led by Ms. Marie-Dominique Simonet, Deputy President and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and International Relations of the French Community of Belgium, visited Fudan and was received by Fudan Chancellor Professor Qin Shaode. Both of the parties attended the opening ceremony for the ULB-Fudan Joint Seminar on Nano-technology and Life Sciences presented by the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Institute of Modern Physics at Fudan, and Fudan School of Life Sciences.
