News from the U21 Network

  

McGill University triples support for Syrian refugee students
  • McGill University pledges to triple support for refugee students through student-driven World University Service of Canada Student Refugee Program. Students have been paying 50 cents per semester to support two refugee students to study at McGill and will now support four additional refugees.

     

  

Melbourne named second best city for international study!
  • Melbourne named Australia’s best city for international students and second best in the world in the QS Best Student Cities Index.

  • Melbourne rose to second behind Paris, who have topped the last four years.

  • The ratings measure cities on their quality of universities, affordability, lifestyle, employment prospects and student community.

  • Melbourne received a perfect score (100/100) for student mix which looks at city’s student population, levels of social inclusion, and tolerance.

  

UK's youngest MP named University of Glasgow's Young Alumnus of the Year
  • Mhairi Black, 21, won her seat in May's general election before completing her MA Hons degree in Politics and Public Affairs.

  • Principal and vice-chancellor, Anton Muscatelli, described Ms Black as a true ambassador for the University of Glasgow, demonstrating huge commitment to her final year studies at the same time as canvassing for election.

 

Educational Innovation
2016 Educational Innovation Conference
  • The 2016 Educational Innovation Conference will be hosted by the University of Birmingham 26-28 October.

  • The conference will explore what teaching excellence means in a research-intensive university.  Further details will be available in the coming months.  Please mark your calendars now!

EI Conference
New EI Cluster Project announced

A new project has begun - the U21 EI Teaching Practice Survey: A baseline survey of teaching practices and faculty attitudes towards teaching & learning across the U21 network.

Universities are committed to evidence-based enhancements of teaching and learning practice.  This project seeks to establish a baseline of where things are prior to commencing a particular strategy or initiative and to track progress after a period of implementation. Specifically, areas will handle:   
  • What practices are faculty using in their teaching and in what combinations and proportions?   

  • What are their attitudes towards teaching and learning?   

  • What are their views on the institutional climate and culture around teaching and learning?

Researcher Engagement
U213MT® winners announced!
  • The U21 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) judging panel had a tough time this year as the quality of the videos was very high.

  • The overall winner was Eamonn Fahy from the University of Melbourne for his thesis presentation on ‘Catching the Silent Thief of Sight’ – which covered his research into glaucoma and early methods of detection.

  • The Highly Commended Award went to Zoe Lam from the University of British Columbia for her thesis presentation on the ‘Perception of Lexical Tone by Heritage Speakers of Cantonese’.

  • Following a high profile social media campaign, the People’s Choice Award went to Carly Muletz Wolz from the University of Maryland for her thesis presentation on the ‘Presence of antifungal bacteria associated with salamander resistance to infection by deadly fungal pathogen’.

New RE Cluster manager takes up her post
  • Dr Christina Mellor joined the U21 Secretariat on 1st December to take up the role of Researcher Engagement Cluster Manger.

  • Chris joins us from the University of Nottingham where she had been working as a Research Development Officer. Her previous role focused on supporting applications to EU funding schemes and managing and tracking research impact.

  • Chris will now be the main point of contact for the Research Engagement Cluster and can be contacted on christina.mellor@universitas21.com.

Researcher Engagement
Scale up of Joint PhD offerings
  • In 2009 U21 established a unique framework for jointly awarding PhDs across the network several students have now graduated with Joint PhDs.

  • We are interested in scaling up the numbers of students able to engage internationally during their doctoral studies.

  • We will also take this opportunity look at ways to simplify the process and liaise with members on best practice and their experiences of internationalising doctoral study. 

Student Experience
Theme announced for 2016 Global Ingenuity Challenge
  • Preparations are under way for undergraduate students to reflect on the 'The Challenge of Sustainable Housing' on 7 to 18 March 2016

  • Teams of up to five undergraduate students, supported by an ingenuity facilitator, are invited to take part in the U21 Global Ingenuity Challenge. 

  • Ingenuity facilitator contact details should be provided by 29 January.

Undergraduate Research Conference 2017 - call for proposals now open!
  • This is the first time we are opening a call for proposals for this event, in a bid to make decisions more transparent.

Student Leaders to meet in Connecticut - registration open
  • The 2016 meeting to be hosted by the University of Connecticut between 6-8 April, focusing on the theme 'Inclusion and Diversity'.

  • Student Leaders will provide a student perspective to the U21 network, suggest new ideas, work to strengthen student involvement with U21 activities and collaborate to gain a global perspective.

Christine Ennew bids farewell to U21 for University of Warwick provost Post
  • Christine Ennew will bid a final farewell to Universitas 21 after over a decade of service having been appointed the next provost of the University of Warwick.

  • The forthcoming AGM in Singapore will be the last Chris attends as U21 Manager after eight years, the latter year as Chair of the Managers’ Group.

  • Chris' role with U21 on behalf of the University of Nottingham will be taken by Professor Hai-Sui Yu, the current PVC International.

  • Many congratulations go to Chris on her new role.
