Educational Innovation

2015 Educational Innovation Conference update – registration deadline approaching!

  • Only a few weeks left to register for the 2015 EI Conference taking place at the University of Edinburgh between the dates of 28-30 October! More details are available via the link below.

  • The conference will focus on the issue of Using the digital to capture the international in teaching & learning. How can we capitalise on the universality of the internet to internationalise our teaching and learning?  Through sharing content, sharing the created material of our students, sharing new pedagogies and the opportunities of big data and crowd sourcing, and through the development of shared programmes, can we develop teaching and learning across traditional geographical boundaries?

  • We will explore this complicated and multifaceted issue through a series of interactive events, networking along with insight from key speakers.

  • A preconference day will explore progress on shared MOOC usage and on emerging criteria for promotion in learning and teaching, as well as providing delegates with an opportunity to discuss and provide feedback from survey data on future directions for the network. For more information on the preconference, please contact Lavinia Winegar-Gott in the U21 Secretariat at lavinia.winegar-gott@universitas21.com for more details.

Researcher Engagement

2015 U21 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is underway!

  • For the third year, a global competition-based on a concept developed by the University of Queensland is being held to find the doctoral student best able to explain their research to a non-specialist audience in three minutes without the use of props or more than one slide.  It is quite a tough challenge to distil the work you are passionate about, which has been consuming so much of your life into such a short period of time.  It is even more of a challenge to do that more than once.

  • The U21 3MT competition pits the winners of university 3MT® competitions against one another in a global virtual competition.  There will be an overall winner, plus a second place, but also the chance for a wider popular vote for The People’s Choice.  That will open for voting on 12 October and last year over 2,300 people voted for their favourite.  This year, we have an additional member participating – the University of Johannesburg will also be submitting an entrant.

  • In November, we will report on the outcome of 2015 U21 3MT – be part of the process to choose the research communication stars of the future!

Early Career Researcher Workshop 2016 Details Announced

  • The ECR workshop 2016 will be focused around the topic of how Big Data at the heart of 21st century research.

  • The ubiquity of data in many fields of research means that much more can be measured and areas of study that were qualitative become quantitative. Large data sets offer researchers across disciplines unprecedented opportunities to address important questions, but will require new methodological and ethical considerations. In this workshop delegates will explore issues around the application of data science in diverse fields, and discuss the implications of working with data for early career researchers.

  • The workshop is to be hosted by the University of Edinburgh on 29-30 September, 2016. Please see the events page via the link below for more information and keep an eye out for updates and registration details.

News from the Student Mobility Group meeting in Dublin

  • Colleagues from seven mobility member universities in Europe met at University College Dublin on 24 August to discuss matters affecting European members, particularly Erasmus+.

  • The core area of focus was on the feasibility of receiving graduate interns through the Erasmus+ funding and the sharing of good practice on Erasmus+ ICM applications, which allows European higher education institutions to apply for funding to send and receive students and staff to and from countries outside the EU.

  • The University of Amsterdam and Lund University shared information on their successful joint international staff week, and Amsterdam extended an invitation for a new university to join them in the organisation and delivery for the next two years; the initiative is a unique opportunity for staff involved in internationalisation from (prospective) partner institutions to develop personal and professional skills, to participate in various social events and to meet with staff of the organising universities.

  • The next meeting will be held in August 2016 at Lund University.
