Water Futures for Sustainable Cities

After three years’ collaboration, researchers from around the network involved in U21’s Water Futures for Sustainable Cities project have published their findings through a number of case studies in the prestigious online journal Ecology and Society. The case studies look at a variety of key water-related themes which fall under the broad heading of ‘the politics of water’.

U21 well-represented at AIEA

The 2015 Association of International Education Administrators meeting took place in Washington in February and U21 was well-represented through a number of member institutions. Of particular interest was a paper given by Professor Iain Martin (UNSW Australia) and Andrea Edwards (Birmingham) entitled Beyond Study Abroad: innovative international strategies which drew on both institutions’ excellent international activity, including their long-term membership of Universitas 21.

Registration is open for the Research Collaboration Group meeting to be held at the University of Nottingham on 28 and 29 May. The meeting will focus around two broad themes – International Research Collaboration and Industrial Engagement and Research. Further details and the registration form are available on the U21 website – www.univeristas21.com/link/RCGmeeting2015 . More information can obtained at www.cascade-fellows.eu

RISE bid

Seven U21 members are finalising a bid to secure funding as part of the EU’s RISE (Research & Innovation Staff Exchange) initiative. The topic which has been identified is Global Food Security: Prevention and Valorisation of Waste in Food Production and will be led at the University of Nottingham by Professor Greg Tucker.

This initiative represents an exciting opportunity to utilise the U21 network and fund increased mobility to benefit all partners with an interest in this important theme within the global food security research agenda. It can also serve as an exemplar for future U21 collaborative activity more broadly, and is a genuine opportunity to demonstrate that U21 can leverage significant funding to facilitate future international cooperation in line with partners’ strategic visions.

More detail is in the latest edition of U21:Discover and we will report on progress as it unfolds.

Student Experience

Global Ingenuity Challenge

Students from Universitas 21 institutions are about to embark on a global challenge which aims to solve one of the world’s most pressing problems: how do we move people around in cities? Teams based in 11 different countries will be using the University of Nottingham’s online creative problem solving tool, Ingenuity Online, to break down the problem and develop innovative and scalable solutions. Teams will submit a three-minute video outlining their solutions to a judging panel for the chance to win US$1,000 and support to accelerate their development. All the ideas will be showcased at the U21 Student Summit in Chile this May. Follow the latest updates on Twitter - #U21ingenuity

People and places

New President and U21 Manager at Korea University

A change in senior management at Korea University has introduced two new faces to the U21 network. Professor Jaeho Yeom took office as President of KU in March, having been Executive Vice President for Administration and External Affairs there, so is already familiar to many within the network. Supporting him in U21 matters is Professor Sunhyuk Kim, the new Vice President for International Affairs and U21 Manager for KU. We look forward to welcoming them both to their first U21 AGM in May and to continued network collaboration with them and colleagues in Korea.
