Research in Brain Science at Fudan Breaks Through
On April 22, a research group led by Associate Professor Yang Zhengang, a faculty member from Fudan Institute of Brain Science, found the distinct activities of nerve stem cell in the process of nerve regenesis. This discovery, made via experiments on mice, provides new possibilities for the treatment of brain damages with the transference and transplant of stem cell.
In the past decade, scientists have found that nerve stem cell exists lifelong in human body, which brings vernal promises for the reparation of brain damages with the help of internal nerve stem cell. However, the fact is that the damaged brain can’t repair itself. Mainstream scientists have been arguing that, the reason why human brain fails in repairing itself is that the number of the nerve stem cell within the brain is so small. Therefore, they believe, the problem can be solved if the number of the stem cell can be increased, and most of their efforts have been put into this task. Nevertheless, the research of
Fudan University Institute of Brain Science, as one of the key projects in the second phase of “985 Project” initiated by Ministry of Education, aims to explore the secrets in brain science for the benefits of human being. In March 2007, Dr. Yang Zhengang, after finishing his Post-doctoral program in the United States, was appointed head of young-faculty project, and then established the lab of nerve system development and nerve stem cell. The average age of the fellow researchers is less than 30. After two years of efforts, Dr. Yang’s lab has built a development model of never fiber and neuroglia cell, two damage models of nerve system. The paper published this time is the third one that has been published in international journals.

Nobel Laureate Dr. Yang Chen-Ning Delivered Keynote Speech on “Fascinating Physics” at Fudan
Besides the great contributions physics has made to the society, Dr. Yang’s speech covered the area from electricity to electromagnetic wave particle. It was divided into 3 parts. First, he mentioned Farady was the person who took human beings into the era of electricity; second, it was Maxwell who unfolded the era of electromagnetic telecommunication; third, parity conservation law is not always true. There is evidence to believe that electromagnetic wave particle is of parity violation under weak interaction. Dr. Yang and Dr. Tsung-Dao Lee published their research findings on parity violation in 1956, and thus won the next year’s Nobel Prize in Physics.
After his keynote speech, Dr. Yang answered questions raised by seated specialists and students, regarding physics studies and higher education. The lecture ended with the prolonged applauses.
It is reported that Fudan has conferred the Honorary Doctorial Degree on Dr. Chen-Ning Yang earlier in 1980s.
