Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz Delivers Speech on Financial Crisis at Fudan

On March 16, 2009, Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, American economist and 2001 Nobel Laureate  in Economic Sciences, delivered a speech entitled “The Economic Crisis and the Global Economy: Lessons for Economic Theory and Policy” at Fudan University. The speech, as one of the academic activities of Shanghai Forum, is held by Shanghai Forum and China Center for Economic Research of Fudan University. Professor ZHANG Jun, Director of the Center, hosted the speech. Warmly welcomed, Professor Stiglitz gave an insightful speech to a packed conference hall, and even the two other parallel conference rooms are left with no seats. Professor Stiglitz exemplified theories on economic crisis and the influences of economic globalization. He also discussed China’s response to the crisis as began last year. Being a vital role in global economic recovery, China should rebuild her confidence and contribute to a lasting global economic stability.

As one of the most renowned economists, Professor Stiglitz’s most influencing research was on screening, a technique used by one economic agent to extract otherwise private information from another, which laid the foundation for an important branch of economics – information economics. It was for this contribution to the theory of information asymmetry that he shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 2001 “for laying the foundations for the theory of markets with asymmetric information” with George A. Akerlof and A. Michael Spence.

After the speech, Professor YANG Yuliang, President of Fudan University, met with Professor Stiglitz and held constructive discussion.
