Fudan Education Development Foundation First Council Meeting

 

The First Council Meeting of Fudan Education Development Foundation was held on May 28, 2006 . Fudan Chancellor and Chair of the Board, Prof. Qin Shaode presented Letter of Appointment to all the council members after Prof. Wang Weiping, Executive Vice President, reviewed to the Council preparations for the launch of the Foundation in the past two years. Fudan 2005 Fiscal Year Report was reviewed and approved during the meeting as well.

 

The First Council Meeting witnesses the first day of Fudan’s 102 th year in its history while Fudan Education Development Foundation is another step forward to a better university. Fudan President Wang Shenghong, Fudan Board of Trustees Member Dr. Li Dak Sum, Dr. Thomas Chen , Dr. Chan Chung Yee, and Dr. Liu Tiecheng also attended the meeting.

PhD Forum by Fudan Law School

 

Fudan Law School has concluded its Doctoral Students Forum on June 4. Under the theme of Sociological Transformation and Sociological Legislature Construction, the two-day forum is open to all PhD candidates from Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong University , and East China University of Politics and Law. 40 papers were submitted to the Forum, 16 of which were awarded and 11 of which were presented on the Forum.

International Symposium on Atomic & Nuclear Physics

International Symposium on Atomic & Nuclear Physics Cross-Discipline, co-sponsored by Institute of Modern Physics at Fudan University, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, was held as scheduled from June 10 to 13. More than 30 experts in related areas from China , U.S. , Japan , Sweden and U.K. attended this symposium with another 30 Fudan graduates. Renowned scientists including nuclear physicists Academician Yang Fujia, Academician Hu Side and Academician Shen Wenqing, ICF Physicist Academician He Xianshi, Prof. Indrek Martinson, former Chair of Nobel Committee for Physics, former Chair of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, Prof. Jurgen Kluge, Deputy Director of GSI, Prof. Yasunori Yamazaki, Dean of Department of Physics at University of Tokyo, P rof. Lee Grodzins, American nuclear physicist from MIT, Prof. Feng Daxuan, Vice President of University of Texas-Dallas, Prof. ToshimitsuYamazaki, particle physicist from University of Tokyo , and Dr. Robin Barnsley, expert on JET and ITER were also present. Scholars gave insightful speeches on newest achievements and development of concerned discipline and held deep discussions as well during this symposium.

The Symposium coincided with the 70th birthday of Academician Yang Fujia, nuclear & atomic physicist and former Fudan President. A small but happy birthday party was organized to celebrate the happy occasion.

COOPERATION

 

Irish Minister of Enterprise , Trade and Employment Michael Martin, Irish Ambassador Declan Kelleher, and CEO of Enterprise Ireland Frank Ryan attended Commencement of Fudan-UCD Joint Software Engineering Bachelor Degree Program 2006 on June 30 on Fudan campus. Dr. Desmond Fitzgeral, Deputy President of University College Dublin and Prof. Wang Shenghong, Fudan President, awarded diploma to every happy graduate.

 

The joint program has around 50 annual enrollment and invites professors from both universities to teach at Fudan.

Fudan International Exchanges Center Launched

The trial opening ceremony of Fudan International Exchanges Center , widely known as Crowne Plaza Fudan Shanghai, was held on May 29. As the first five-star hotel in Yangpu District, Crowne Plaza Fudan Shanghai is co-invested by Fudan and Shanghai International Group Co. Ltd(SIG), operated by Intercontinental Hotels Group. Located opposite to Fudan campus, the newly constructed 19-floor- hotel boasts 309 luxurious rooms, food & beverage venues serving both Western and Chinese food, rooftop Chancellor’s Club,12 multi-function meeting rooms, the Crowne Plaza Ballroom and other facilities, including Health Club and indoor pool, all of which rounds off the design style of modern and cultural.

Laboratory Animal Ethics Committee Established

 

In order to protect laboratory animal welfare and to supervise and manage scientific use of animal, the Laboratory Animal Ethics Committee was recently founded at Fudan School of Pharmacy of. Since June 1 on, researchers at School of Pharmacy shall obtain permission from the Committee before keeping and working on any laboratory animal for research purposes. The Laboratory Animal Ethics Committee is expected to effectively regulate animal experiments carried out the School, in compliance with the principles of animal protection, animal welfare, animal ethics and comprehensive scientific evaluations.

Liberal Education Promoted among Oversea Students

 

A two-day Fudan Entrance Examination for Oversea Students was concluded in Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul (Korea), Singapore as well as Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on June 3. 643 foreign students took this Examination, 30% more than the record of last year. This was the first time that Fudan held this Examination in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur .

 

This year Fudan also reformed the enrollment policy where Liberal Education principle was applied. Overseas students will be enrolled into 8 specialties including foreign languages, humanities, Law & Politics, Economy & Management, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Technology and Medicine. After the first year’s comprehensive and liberal education, students start their major courses study for these 8 specialties.

 

Besides, Fudan offers, for the first time, Scholarship for Overseas Freshman as an award to 14 highest scorers in the Entrance Examination, 9 for humanities and Law & Politics, 3 for Economy & Management, and 2 for Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology.

Graduation Performance Pearls Drop on Cymbals by Teng Fei Academy

 

Teng Fei (meaning soaring) Academy of Fudan College produced and staged their graduation play Pearls Drop on Cymbals in Xiang Hui Hall on June 3, a drama themed on the students’ one-year life and experience of liberal education at Fudan College .

This play was written by Zhu Mila of Class 11, while the title of the play was derived from the pronunciation of the four protagonists’ names, which means the silvery sound of pearls falling down on a cymbals. Two performing groups were playing on the same stage, telling two parallel stories, which implies the students’ unique experience of two educational systems at the same time, namely the Fudan College and the Dorm / Academy system.

Upon the ending of the play, a birthday cake with the logo of Teng Fei Academy was presented on the stage, celebrating the one-year birthday of the Academy.

Free Medical Care by Fudan Affiliating Hospitals

 

Jointly organized by Shanghai Education Television Station, Fudan Affiliating Children’s Hospital, Minghang District Public Health Administration and the Qibao Town Government, a large-scale charity event called “Free Medical Care on Children’s Day” was held at Qibao Town in Shanghai . More than 30 medical experts from 26 departments of the Children’s Hospital offered free medical care service to children and parents at Qibao Town .

 

Later on June 3, in honor of the 11th National Eye Health Day, over 10 specialists from Fudan Affilicating EENT Hospital offered free eye disease consulting service to more than 300 local citizens.

International Scholarly Journal Exhibition

 

The first International Scholarly Journal Exhibition, co-sponsored by Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education , and China Educational Publications Import & Export Corporation (CEPIEC), was held in Fudan Arts Library from June 6 to 8. The Exhibition collected over 1200 Key journals from more than 80 famous university presses, professional society publishing houses and commercial publishers that come from 15 countries, covering 12 subjects including mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Publishers including Springer, John Wiley & Sons Ltd were present. Meanwhile, e-resource platforms and academic lectures covering related areas were available to visitors and participants.

Student Volunteer Association Established

 

Student Volunteer Association of Fudan was established on June 12, with members of volunteers from all departments and schools. As a student association, the newly-established organization is responsible for all those who volunteer in social service. Managed by students, the Association is expected to train Fudan students in social work and encourage volunteer work, and in turn strengthen the relations between campus and society.

SCHOLOAR

 

90 th Birthday of Prof. Yu Tongyin – Founder of Fudan Macromolecule

 

As one of the founders of Chinese Macromolecule Science and founder of Fudan Macromolecule Science, Prof. Yu Tongyin’s 90 th birthday was celebrated on campus with four academic presentations in which he joined and shared his vision and reflection on Macromolecule Science with hundreds of attending faculty and students. His old students including Academicians Prof. Yang Yuliang and Prof. Jiang Ming attended the celebration or sent regards to Prof. Yu , with representatives from National Natural Science Foundation of China, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Zhejiang University, Peking University, Sichuang University, while Polymer Division of Chinese Chemical Society, Shanghai Chemical Industry Association sent congratulatory letters.

 

During the event, Fudan Chancellor Pro.f Qin spoke highly of the contributions and achievements that Prof. Yu made during his 66-year of teaching life. The Department of Macromolecular Science and the Institute of Macromolecular Science of Fudan University were established in May, 1993. They originated from the teaching and research group of Macromolecular Science of the Department of Chemistry (1958-1982), the Institute of Macromolecules (1958-1962), and the teaching and research group of the Department of Material Science (1983-1993). They are one of the first academic and research units devoted to Macromolecular Science in China , and also one of the first State-established units that are entitled to granting degrees of Master and Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science as well as providing postdoctoral posts.

Environmental Scientist Wang Tao Appointed Fudan Visiting Scholar

 

Environmental Scientist Porf. Wang Tao from the Dept. of the Civil and Structural Engineering of Hong Kong Polytechnic University was appointed Fudan Visiting Scholar before he made an academic lecture on “Environmental Pollution of Urban Atmosphere”, sharing his insights and working experience with Fudan students at the Dept. of Environmental Science and Engineering on June 9.

 

Prof. Wang ’s research interest lies in Atmospheric chemistry, air-quality management, transboundary transport of air pollution, instrument development, field measurement studies, and data analysis. His publications can be found in many international academic periodicals including J. Geophys. Res., Geophys. Res. Lett., and Atmos. Environ. among the others. In 2005, he was appointed Chief Scientist of 973 Project by the Ministry of Science and Technology, working on acid rain research.

Movie Director Li An Conferred Honorary Professorship by Fudan Visual Art College

 

Mr. Li An, famous movie director, was conferred Honorary Professorship by Fudan Visual Art College on June 18. On the date, the Academy Winner director shared his life experience with 300 students and answered various questions. The impressive lecture was well received by the interested audience.

Timothy A. Springer Conferred Honorary Chair Professorship

 

Conferment of Honorary Chair Professorship on Prof. Timothy A. Springer, Harvard professor, Member of National Academy of Sciences (NAS), USA, and Member of National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NAAS), USA, as was held on June 27. Prof. Springer is the second scholar introduced to Fudan as Honorary Chair Professor.

 

An internationally renowned biologist, Prof. Springer has made substantial contribution to his field of studies with over 500 papers published. He served as Chairman of the Biophysics Section of NAS in 2004 and received Crafoord Prize awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (RSAS).

 

Professor Springer will join projects at Fudan Laboratory of Molecular Medicine which is supervised by Ministry of Education for research and faculty training.

VISIT

 

Mayor of Rotterdam Visited Fudan

 

Delegation headed by Mr. Ivo Opstelten, Mayor of Rotterdam the Netherlands visited Fudan on May 31 to witness the signing ceremony for Concept Memorandum of Understanding between Fudan and Erasmus University Rotterdam together with Fudan Executive Vice President Prof. Wang Weiping. The two universities agreed to further strengthen the bilateral ties and to establish more specific collaborative agreements towards academic cooperation and exchange in the future.

Sweden Day @ Fudan

 

On June 10 Project China 2006, a team of 12 students from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Stockholm School of Business, presented a Sweden Day @ Fudan on campus with assistance of the Nordic Centre at Fudan and Fudan Student Union.

Sweden Day was launched with an attractive speech by Swedish Consul General Mr. Lars Andreasson and the first highlight while Project China 2006 presented Fudan University a mini Gothenburg the Sweden Ship.

15 renowned Swedish companies participated in the Sweden Day, including Alfa Laval, Atlas Copco, SSAB, Volvo, Volvo Cars, Mannheimer Swartling, Haldex, Procurator, Stora Enso, SonyEricsson, and Ericsson. All students present had a chance to meet and talk to representatives from these companies and therefore have a better understanding of Swedish business culture. 60 Fudan students was chosen amongst many applicants to participate in the exclusive part of the Sweden day later that day and had a more up-close interaction with three companies, Atlas Copco, Stora Enso, and Mannheimer Swartling.

After IKEA Shanghai served a typical and delicious Swedish meal of meatballs with potatoes and sweets which was highly appreciated both by the students and the company representatives, students from China and Sweden joined hands in traditional Swedish dances around the maypole to celebrate an early Swedish Mid-Summer Festival. Prizes were awarded through lottery to participating students.

Sweden Day was rounded off with a magnificent midsummer dinner banquet and a wonderful trip to the only Ice Bar in Shanghai at the restaurant Taste of Scandinavia , which provided a chance for further interaction between company representatives and students.

Since its first success in Fudan in 2004, Sweden Day has become an annual cooperation between Swedish and Chinese students. After one year away to Tsinghua University in Beijing in 2005, this year Sweden Day returned to Fudan Shanghai and was warmly welcomed by 500 students.

Ambassador Forum

 

Another event of Fudan Ambassador Forum Series was held at Fudan University on June 16. Mr. Philippe GUELLUY, Ambassador of France to China , was invited to lecture on EU’s CFSP and Its Relations with NATO.

 

During his one-and-a-half-hours speech, the ambassador reviewed the history of EU’s security policy, and voiced his opinions on the current situation of EU’s CFSP. His incisive analysis and humorous remarks earned warm applause from the audience. After the lecture, Mr. Ambassador answered some questions by students followed by heated discussions.

 

Consul General and Education Consul of France in Shanghai were among the audience. Prof. Gui Yonghao Vice President of Fudan Univ ersity, Prof. Mei Zhaorong the Ambassador Forum Chair of Fudan, Prof. Shen Dingli Executive Deputy Dean of Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, and Prof. Ding Chun Executive Vice Director of Center for European Studies of Fudan University, met the French guests before the ambassador delivered the speech.

Fudan Ambassador Forum is co-organized by Center for European Studies and Institute of International Studies of Fudan University . The Forum is chaired by Prof. Mei Zhaorong and organized by Prof. Ding Chun. Political figures as well as scholars are invited to lecture for Fudan students on popular issues of world concern on a regular basis. Since its inception in 2004, the Forum has delivered a quite number of high-level lectures. The feedbacks are extremely positive.

Visit by President of the University of Washington

 

Dr. Mark A. Emmert, President of the University of Washington (UW), and Ms. Diane Adachi, Director of International Relations, UW visited Fudan on June 20 and wished future cooperation with Fudan in Global health, Urban planning and environmental policy, Computer science and engineering, Combination of genomic study and pharmacy, Asia Law, International relations and public affairs, and Chinese language training. Fudan Executive Vice President Prof. Wang Weiping also suggested areas of public health and biomedicine.

 

Both the UW and Fudan are members of Association of Pacific Rim Universities and share many similarities in term of academic and administrative.

Ambassador to Australia Lectured at Fudan

 

Is Australia China’s neighbor? How shall we together answer the challenges of the new era? Madam Fu Yin, Ambassador of China to Australia shared her answers with students on June 26 at Fudan at the invitation of Fudan School of International Relations and Public Administration. With abundant and convincing case studies facts, Mme. Fu analyzed aspects of China-Australia relations, including politics, economy, trade, education, cultural, regional cooperation and multi-lateral cooperation. Questions raised by students regarding international relations, resources, and China ’s diplomacy were well addressed by Mme. Fu with elaborated analysis.
