Fudan Alumnus Discovered Secret of Shedding Seeds Prevention

 

This March, Fudan alumnus Tao Sang discovered the secret how cereals as the primary food of human beings for ten thousand years like rice, corn and wheat, can be protected from shed seeds. When his paper was published, Science gave a quick report through the internet and then published it as a cover article.

 

The 40-year old American scientist Tao Sang was born in South of Chongqing City. He got both his BSc and MSc in Botany at Fudan. He then went to US for his doctoral degree in 1989. He is now a tenure professor in the Botany Department of Michigan State University , US .

Five Dissertations from Fudan Selected 2006 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation: Fudan Ranks Second in China

 

Fudan, with five dissertations awarded National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation 2006, ranks second in China , only after Tsinghua University . Other outstanding universities include Peking University , Zhejiang University and Chinese University of Science and Technology. Viewed from the past eight annual selections, Fudan has altogether 41 dissertations awarded, ranking third nationwide.

President Wang Attended the first World Conference of Confucius Institute

 

On July 6 and 7, the first World Conference of Confucius Institute was held in Beijing organized by the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL). Confucius Institute is a non-profitable organization aiming at the promotion of Chinese language and Chinese Culture, starting to set up in many foreign countries from the year 2004.

Over 300 representatives, including presidents and leaders of the universities and Confucius Institute from all over the world, as well as the governmental officials and ambassador representatives participated in this conference.

 

Fudan President Wang Shenghong delivered a speech on the opening ceremony representing the universities in China . He illustrated the successful model of Stockholm Confucius Institute and introduced Fudan’s experience.


With the development of international exchange between China and the world, Chinese language becomes more and more popular. At present, the number of persons learning Chinese as a foreign language amounts to over 30 million. 80 Confucius institutes and schools were established in 37 countries and regions, which contribute to Chinese cultural awareness and activities.

Fudan Int’l Management Science Forum 2006

 

Hosted by Fudan Management Award Foundation, National Natural Science Foundation of China and Fudan University , Fudan International Management Science Forum 2006 was held on August 18, devoted to the theme of "Society, Sustainable Development of Economy and Management Science".

 

This Forum is the highest level academic conference on management science hosted by Fudan University after its centennial. Academician Dr. Guo Chongqing delivered a keynote speech on "Management Science Development of China". Speeches by Prof. Anna Nagurney from Massachusetts University , Prof. Charles J. Corbett from Anderson Management School of University of California , and Prof. Pierre-Jean Benghozi from Paris University of Sci-Tech were also well received by the participants.

 

Together with over a hundred guests to the Forum. Mr. Cheng Siwei, Vice Chair of National People’s Congress and Vice Chair of Fudan Management Award Foundation, and Mr. Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, attended this Forum and delivered speeches.

Seminar on "Change in Modern Chinese Financial System" held

 

From August 29 to 31, a seminar on "Change in Modern Chinese Financial System" co-hosted by Fudan Centers for Chinese Financial History Studies and Asian Studies was held on campus.

 

This is the first seminar in financial history studies that targeted financial system changes. Over 30 scholars from the United States , Japan and China attended the event including Professor Ji Zhaojin of Johns Hopkins University Institute of Advanced International Relations, USA , Professor Wu Li of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Ye Shichang of Fudan School of Economics and Professor Liu Hongzhong of Fudan Institute of Financial Studies.

 

More than 20 papers were submitted to this seminar which mainly focused on subtopics including financial policies and system, changes in financial intermediary and financial market, and cooperate financial system. This seminar had breakthroughs in either content, perspectives, and methodology, and hence is significant to further promoting Chinese financial history studies. Appointment for Fudan Center for Chinese Financial History Studies full-time and part-time researchers was held during the seminar.

Fudan Attended Shanghai-Goteborg 20-Year Sisterhood Celebration

 

To honor the arrival of the Swedish ship Goteborg at Shanghai , the final stop of its China Voyage, a China-Sweden Business Day was held at Shanghai International Convention Centre on Aug.30, co-organized by Shanghai Municipal Government, City of Goteborg , Invest in Sweden Agency, and Business Region of Goteborg. The Business Day was also a part of the 20th Anniversary Celebration of sisterhood between the two cities, Shanghai and Goteborg.

 

Prof. Gui Yonghao, Vice President of Fudan Universit, gave a presentation on research and academia cooperation between Fudan and Swedish universities over the past ten years to the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Karl-Philip, Mayor of Goteborg G?ran Johansson and the business community present on the day. With examples of Nordic Centre at Fudan, Sino-Swedish Campus at Fudan, and the Confucius Institute in Stockholm , Prof. Gui underlined the ever-growing enthusiasm for more extensive collaborations from both sides.

 

Also present to the China-Sweden Business Day were Mr. Feng Guoqin, Executive Deputy Mayor of Shanghai , Pro Vice-Chancellor of Goteborg University , Vice-Chancellor of Chalmers University of Technology, and representatives from most of the well-known Swedish companies.

10th Anniversary of MIT-Fudan IMBA

 

The 10th Anniversary Celebration of MIT-Fudan Management and Educational Cooperation was held on July 8. Prof. Richard Schmalensee, Dean of MIT Sloan School of Management, elite alumni representatives of MIT Sloan School of Management, faculty representatives from Fudan School of Management, alumni of the MIT-Fudan IMBA attended the celebration.

 

The purpose of this celebration is to review the achievements made in the past ten years, appreciate the great contribution the Sloan School of Management made to Chinese management education, and further promote our cooperation in depth.

 

Under the theme of "Foresight and Growth", the celebration committee has hosted a series of activities in June and July, including Career Development Forum on June 24 and commencement of IMBA Class 2006 on July 7 and 8. Many a famous professor from MIT also flew to Shanghai and joined the events.

 

IMBA Fudan program was founded in 1996, one of the two cooperative programs of MIT Sloan School of Management with two top Chinese universities (the other is with Tsing Hua University ). It emphasizes internationalization, dedicated to nurturing cosmopolitan management talents who have a global view and are familiar with Chinese context. Sponsored by some Foundation, the program first enrolled students in 1997. The program sponsors are from Hong Kong , Japan and Singapore , who are alumni of MIT Sloan School of Management mostly. By far, Fudan Management School has sent 60 faculty members to MIT Sloan School of Management for short-term study. MIT Sloan School of Management offers original textbooks and case studies, and sends their faculty members to Fudan to lecture for a short time each semester. Some 476 students have graduated from this IMBA program and another 213 students are attending it.

Fudan-KTH Joint Program of Microelectronics Masters

 

On July 11, Fudan held a signing ceremony with Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden (KTH) for the joint program of Microelectronics Masters.

 

Fudan President Wang Shenghong and KTH President Anders Flodstr?m signed the cooperative agreement, which symbolized the first substantial step taken by Fudan, KTH and Chalmers University of Technology after Sino-Swedish Campus at Fudan was jointly built up since last October. Through this program, Fudan and KTH will practice the European style and concept of education. The international students will be enrolled and taught in English by both KTH and Fudan, thus to foster globalized talents of Microelectronics.

UID/RFID Open Lab Established at Fudan Software School

 

UID/RFID Open Laboratorya joint project by Fudan and Japanese YARP UNL Institute, was established at Fudan Zhangjiang Campus on July 17.

 

UID/RFID Open Lab will focus on research in the fields of logistic, retail and exhibition applications and will be open to UID/RFID research organizations and individuals from home and abroad. Professor Sakamura Ken, of YRP UNL Institute, now serves as Vice Dean of Graduate School of Information Science, Tokyo University . It is expected that the Lab will also foster the exchanges and cooperation between Fudan University and Tokyo University , and between Chinese and Japanese UID/RDID research organizations.

 

Prof. Sakamura Ken, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Foreign Economic Relation and Trade Committee, and Prof. Zang Binyu, Dean of Software School Fudan University attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

"Shanghai Forum 2007" Signed at Fudan

 

The signing ceremony of "Shanghai Forum 2007" on July 19 at Fudan University officially started preparations for the new round of Shanghai Forum. Fudan President Wang Shenghong, Vice President Xu Zheng and President of Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies Professor Kim Jae Youl attended the ceremony.

 

Shanghai Forum is an international academic forum held by Fudan University , aiming to establish a platform for inter-communication between the academic, the political and the business circles and to facilitate comprehensive and deep discussions on international economic and political issues of common concern to promote development and prosperity of the Asian region. The first Shanghai Forum was held by Fudan during its centennial year and attracted broad attention from domestic and abroad. Nearly 300 participants including Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Minister Mentor of Singapore , Mr. Chen Jian, Vice Secretary-General of the United Nations and Mr. Zhang Sheng Man, Vice President of the World Bank attended the forum.

 

Shanghai Forum 2007 will focus on the subject of "Economic Globalization and Asia ’s Selection" as was in 2005. 300 participants are expected to attend.

Fudan Established Marxism Institute

 

Fudan Marxism Institute was established on July 1, in the year of the 85 anniversary of Chinese Communist Party. This is an important step to conform the theoretical research and teaching resources, to further develop theoretical research and research innovation. Fudan Chancellor Qin Shaode announced the establishment of the institute and delivered a speech. Professor Li Shenming, Vice Dean of Chinese Social Science Academy and Fudan President Wang Shenghong unveiled the Institute together. Ms. Wen Tiehui, Vice Chair of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission attended the ceremony and also delivered a speech.

 

The Marxism Institute will work as a research platform and an innovation base to attract experts and scholars in humanities and social science field. The institute will also pool resources from and outside of campus to further develop Marxism theoretical research.

Fudan Opens International Future Scientist Summer Camp  

On July 4, the International Future Scientist Summer Camp opened at Fudan University . 35 students from 16 high schools, who were selected by a camp committee, attended six weeks of science and research training camp. They also had chances to talk and work together with the scientists during the program.


This is the first time that "Future Scientist Summer Camp", an internationally renowned summer camp program, was hosted by a university in China .

Siamese Twin Girls Successfully Separated in Fudan Affiliating Children’s Hospital

 

At eight fifty o’clock in the evening of July 6, a pair of Siamese twins from Taizhou were successfully separated in Fudan Affiliating Children’s Hospital after the operation that lasted twelve hours and fifty minutes. Its success is a medical miracle. Until sixteen o’clock of July 8, Jingni’s condition was stabilized while her sister Jingxuan was still in critical condition.

 

The twins shared liver, intestines, and urinary system for ten months ever since their birth, and both of them suffer from congenital heart diseases. The successful operation brought the family bliss and the hospital pride.

Huas han Hospital : Breakthrough Discovery for Brain Infarction Research

 

The existence of newly developed nerves in the brain that has suffered from infarction has been recently proved by a group of Chinese and American scientists led by Associate Professor Wang Xiaomei from Hua Shan Hospital Affiliating to Fudan University and Associate Professor Kunlin Jin from Buck Institution for Age Research.

 

Published on the August edition of PNAS ( Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America ), this finding was believed to bring new hope to the cure of brain infarction. After the release of this research finding, various major western media, such as The Guardian, Marin Independent and KCBS all followed up immediately with great enthusiasm.

University of Hamburg Conferred Honorary Ph.D. on Prof. Zhu Weizheng

 

In acknowledgment of his outstanding academic achievements as sinologist and historian, Asia-Africa-Institute of University of Hamburg Conferred Honorary Ph.D. on Professor Zhu Weizheng from History Department of Fudan University . Prof. Zhu is the first Chinese scholar awarded the honorary title by University of Hamburg and therefore the second scholar after Prof. Ji Xianlin by a German university ever.

 

A Fudan alumnus Class 1960, Prof. Zhu Weizheng has been a faculty member with his Alma Matar and is now a leading historian in China .

 

Among over 130 books he published on Chinese Cultural History, Chinese Ideology History, Chinese Classics Study History, and Chinese Historical Studies, there are Out of the Middle Ages, Tradition without a Determinate Tone, and In Search of True Civilization: On the History of Late Qing Scholarship, Spring and Autumn in a Gourd.

Mechanistic and Methodological Studies of PB Transposon in Mammals: A New " 973" Project

 

Mechanistic and Methodological Studies of PB Transposon in Mammals has been approved and become one of the " 973" projects of 2006, as recently published by the Department of Scientific and Technological Development. Professor Wu Xiaohui of Fudan Institute of Developmental Biology is appointed Chief Scientist for this project.

 

The challenge in the post-genome era has been shifted to understanding the function of each genes and fishing genes of great theoretical and/or commercial values, that is, functional annotation of the genome.

 

With mammalian PB systems first created by Fudan Institute of Developmental Biology as the fundamental, and the advantages of the fields concerned, the project is expected to deepen our understanding of mammalian transposon and transposition process, and provide new tools for exploring gene functions, human gene therapy, and genetic studies in other animals. Furthermore, it is expected to enhance China ’s leading role in the research area of mammalian transposon and promote the development of Chinese correlative disciplines and industries including biomedicine.

On July 2, led by President Mary Brown Bullock, the New York based Chinese Medical Board delegation, visited Fudan. Executive Vice President of Fudan Professor Wang Weiping presided over the joint seminar held at the medical campus. Professors from both parties held discussions on various issues concerning the challenges and opportunities China faces in the fields of medical education and service.

Visit by Goteborg Universtiy & Chalmers University of Technology

 

Coming with the Swedish boat Goteborg to Shanghai were two Swedish universities from the boat’s home port city, Goteborg University and Chalmers University of Technology. On Aug. 31, delegations from both universities, headed by Pro Vice-Chancellor of Goteborg University Prof. Margareta Wallin Peterson and Vice-Chancellor of Chalmers University of Technology Prof. Karin Markides, visited Fudan University and were warmly received by Fudan Vice President Wang Weiping.

 

Both Swedish universities were highly interested in developing cooperative relations with Fudan. Goteborg University , a founding member of the Nordic Centre at Fudan, wished cooperation in journalism and medical research projects, while Chalmers University of Technology found common interest with Fudan in environmental sciences, ecological development of Chongming Island , logistics and supply chain management among the others. The possibilities of joint degree programs were also explored by the parties.

Special Program: Summer Course

 

The 7th Nordic Centre Summer Course

 

The Nordic Centre Summer Course was held in July for the 7th time.

 

The course aims at giving a comprehensive introduction to modern Chinese politics, economy and culture, and Chinese and foreign teachers together provided the academic content.

 

70 students from 21 Nordic member universities of Nordic Centre took part in the course, which was divided into two parallel themes, Politics and Economy and Politics and Culture . For many of them, it was their first time to China, and the mix of lectures, cultural visits and social experiences will hopefully inspire some of them to pursue their studies related to China.

 

Dr Fredrik Fallman and Dr. Matti Nojonen from Stockholm University and Helsinki School of Economics were this year’s "Nordic teachers". The course is very popular among Nordic students every year.

2006 APRU Undergraduates Summer Program

 

As Member of Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), Fudan University hosted 1st APRU Undergraduate Summer Program themed " Introduction to Modern China " from July 24 to Aug 4. During this two-week program, Fudan professors lectured in English on Chinese politics, economics, culture, religion, society and literature to 59 undergraduates from 27 APRU members. Field studies offered by the program also included Martial Arts practice, Chinese Acrobatic show, visit to Shanghai Museum , boat cruise on Huangpu River , visit to Bao Steel, and excursion to Jin Xi Village among the others.

2006 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses at Fudan

 

From August 24 to September 22, 2006 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses, jointly presented by the Foreign Affairs Office of Fudan University, Austrian Center and Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, is held at Fudan.

 

Divided into two groups, altogether eighty Austrian students will spend two weeks in Shanghai , taking lectures from Fudan professors, paying visits to enterprises and going on excursions in and out of Shanghai . The purpose of hosting this summer program is to help the Austrian young people to gain a more direct and comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of contemporary China .
