Pollution-free “Green Carpet” Invented by Fudan

Professor Wang Xiangrong from Fudan School of Environment Sciences received the annual award of the first prize of 2006 Shanghai Invention Patent Award for his invention of soilless breeding methods of ecological carpet-style turf.

This “ecological soilless carpet-style turf" is very similar to a real carpet, which can be easily rolled up and unfold and it can be placed anywhere. Water after paving, and green meadows would appear immediately. The traditional production methods of meadows are conducted in the field, which brings problems such as long production cycle, large amount of occupied land, severely damaged soil resources, transport inconvenience and the high possibilities of carrying pests and weeds. The national patent of Professor Wang Xiangrong, "soilless breeding methods of ecological carpet-style turf",using Nutrition matrix turf made of natural non-soil materials, breeding under certain cultivation management technologies, controlling seeding rate, temperature, humidity, etc, which helps the turf to achieve the short-term rapid breeding.

Compared with the traditional methods of turf production, the advantages of the application of this new technical method is characterized by the following : i) low cost and high efficiency; ii) no damage of farmland and protecting land resources; iii) short production cycle (6-7 weeks); iv) low-weight, convenience of transport and construction; v) Long green cycle, strong resistance; vi) a wide range of uses, significant benefits of society, economics and ecology.

Since September 2003, the patented technology has been applied by Hangzhou Huafu Environmental Technology Development Company and Huali Environment Art Development Company in Hangzhou Yuhang High-tech Agricultural Development Park. The plantation park occupies more than 200 acres, which has produced 15 times so far, with a total amount of more than 3,000 acres, having created a profit of over 1.2 million RMB. Meanwhile, the project is also the high-tech model project of the Ministry of agriculture of People’s Republic of China (2003-2006).
