CONFERENCE

 

Grand Opening of Fudan International Management Forum 2007

 

 

 

2007 Fudan International Management Forum 2007 co-sponsored by Fudan Premium Fund of Management and Fudan University opened on July 18th. Prof. Long Yongtu, Secretary General of Fudan Premium Fund of Management, chaired the opening ceremony. Fudan President Prof. WANG Shenghong and Fudan Chancellor Prof. QIN Shaode together with board members of the Fund participated in the opening ceremony.

 

Candidates for the Management Award reported on their respective research results after the opening session. According to the Fund Charter, this year’s Award will be given to candidates in the field of business management.

 

Fudan International Management Forum is the most important annual international management conference at Fudan University. To match the Award in the field of business management, the theme of the Forum this year is ”business management and the growth of enterprise”. The first day of the Forum focused on ”building outstanding enterprise: the best Chinese mode of business management” for enterprises, while on the second day there was discussion of experts on the topic of ”development of management theory and the growth of enterprise”.

Seminar on Sino-USA Non-proliferation and Export Control Held by Fudan University and Washington University

 

Seminar on Sino-USA Non-proliferation and Export Control jointly organized by Fudan University and Washington University was held in Center for American Studies from July 19th to 21st. The topics of the seminar included “situations of non-proliferation and export control in the 21st century”, “Sino-USA policies of non-proliferation and export control”, “research and analyses on norms and policies of non-proliferation and export control”, “educational cooperation of Sino-USA non-proliferation and export control”.

 

The international seminar initiated by both China and USA aims to improve the teaching and research of theories, policies and techniques on the prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and export control in the colleges and research institutions in China. It aims to cultivate more talents for non-proliferation and export control, to provide a better academic foundation for cooperation among governments in the field of Sino-USA non-proliferation.

 

The American party sent scholars and experts from Washington University, University of Georgia, Monterey Institute of International Studies and Boeing Company to participate in the seminar. Over 20 domestic scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Defense University, The Academy of Military Science, Zhejiang University, Luoyang Military Institute of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai Institute of International Studies, Shanghai Customs College also participated in the seminar.

 

Guests including Mr. ZHANG Yan, Director of the Department of Arms Control of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. WANG Long, Director of the Department of Mechanic, Electronic and Hi-tech Industry of Ministry of Commerce, and Mr. LI Genxin, Secretary-General of China Arms Control and Disarmament Association, delivered key-note speeches.

 

This seminar was a part of the trilateral agreement on non-proliferation and export control signed by Institute of International Studies of Fudan, Institute of Global and Regional Security of Washington University and Institute of Global Security of the Pacific Northwest National Research Center in the early 2007. According to the agreement, Dr. ZhANG Jiadong from Fudan Center for American Studies is to visit USA to study research and teach on non-proliferation and anti-terrorism.

Nordic Confucius Institute in Stockholm Council Holds the 3rd Annual Meeting at Fudan

 

Nordic Confucius Institute in Stockholm Council has recently convened its third annual meeting at Fudan. Chairman of the Council, Dean of International Cultural Exchange School of Fudan University, Professor ZHU Yongsheng, presided over the meeting. Dean of the Institute, Professor Torbjorn Loden delivered a report on his annual work. Doctor LI Qian, on behalf of the Institute, presented the last fiscal year’s financial report to the audience. Members of the Council, both from home and abroad, reviewed the reports afterward and highly appreciated the achievements of the Confucius Institute from last year, and expressed satisfaction with the financial performance as well.

 

Mandarin teaching program continued to be successful when Nordic Confucius Institute in Stockholm stepped into her second year journey. In 2006, the Institute enrolled 25 students for the spring semester and 50 for the fall. The number of registered students in the Institute amounted to 100. Confucius Institute has made remarkable achievement in the popularization of Mandarin teaching material as well as HSK testing. There have been a growing number of HSK testees currently. Confucius Institute always provides support on Mandarin teaching to the locals, such as guidance and service on teaching methodology, teaching materials and communication network setup for Mandarin-teaching instructors. Since November 2006, the Confucius Institute has been holding a bi-weekly salon for Mandarin learners and instructors in the form of presentation based on a theme and free talk and discussion. In the salon, Swedish Mandarin lovers are able to watch Chinese Kungfu, appreciate Chinese arts, and learn to sing Chinese songs. The salon itself is a very good platform for Mandarin lovers to practice Mandarin, get to know Chinese culture and develop friendship.

 

The Nordic Confucius Institute in Stockholm also plays an active role in promoting Sino-Swedish culture exchange. In September 2006, the Institute held a symposium on Sino-Swedish Relations in a Historical Perspective successfully. More than 20 scholars, both from Sweden and China, took part in the symposium. The collection of theses for the symposium was published by the renowned academic periodical, Cross-Cultural Dialogue, which will play a significant part in promoting the Sino-Swedish relations and communication. The Institute invited several distinguished sinologists to make speech and plans to invite renowned scholars as CHENG Zhongying, LE Daiyun for cultural exchange to Sweden.

 

The Council deliberated on 2008 year plan and budget plan, and came to an agreement that in view of the rapid student number increase in Mandarin learning in Sweden, the Confucius Institute will increase enrollment number to the appropriate extent and diversify the teaching methods with the prerequisites of good teaching quality. Besides, Council members also agreed on various issues including compiling Swedish-Chinese teaching materials cooperatively, promoting Mandarin teaching in Swedish high schools, dispatching more instructors to the Institute and establishing connection with other Confucius Institutes in European countries.

92 Postgraduates Sent for National Study-abroad Program

 

China Scholarship Council signed agreement with Fudan University to sponsor 150 qualified postgraduates every year to study abroad from academic year 2007 to 2011.

 

Co-organized by Graduate School, HR Office, and Foreign Affairs Office, Fudan University has selected and sent 92 postgraduates, 8 of which for Ph.D. degree programs and 84 for course programs, and 18 of which from humanity background and 35 from science.

 

As Fudan Graduate School remarked, the postgraduates are keeping in touch with their home departments and Fudan professors while studying abroad.

Youth Innovation Competition in Global Governance Held at Fudan

 

 

July 4 saw the opening of The 1st Youth Innovation Competition in Global Governance at Fudan University. Representatives of the co-hosts including Professor YAN Shuang, Vice President of Fudan, Professor LONG Yongtu, Dean of the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, and Ms. JIANG Lingyuan, representative of The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), attending the opening ceremony, together with Ms. JIANG Lan, Vice President of the major conference sponsor Volvo Group attended the news conference.

 

The competition started in January 2007 and received proposals from university students on various topics relating to the major issues in the global affairs.

 

More than 80 students and 23 teams from 14 countries entered the final round of competition held at Fudan University from July 10-14. The Most Valuable Project Award was presented to an internationalized team by Fudan students and overseas students and their project proposal on environmental governance. University of Hamburg was presented The Most Innovative Project Award.

The Class 2007 Commencement Held Solemnly

 


 

At 8:30 AM, July 6th, the Class 2007 Commencement for Undergraduates solemnly took place in Choi Tai Stadium. President of Fudan University, Prof. WANG Shenghong, together with other university leaders Prof. ZHANG Yihua, Prof. YAN Shuang, Prof. CHEN Liming, Prof. LIU Jianzhong, Prof. CAI Dafeng, Prof. GUI Yonghao and Dr. XU Zheng and so forth attended the ceremony. There were 3682 would-be graduates, over 200 faculty members and more than 800 parents at the grand ceremony. The Commencement was chaired by Professor CHEN Liming, Vice President of Fudan.

 

At 2 PM, the Class 2007 Commencement for Postgraduates took place in the same place. President WANG Shenghong, as well as other vice presidents and faculty representatives Prof. WANG Weiqi, Prof. JIANG Ming, Prof. ZHANG Jinsheng, Prof. WANG Shuizhao and so on attended the ceremony in the rostrum area. Faculty representatives, leaders of colleges and schools and over 2,000 postgraduates with their family members were present at the Commencement. This year there are altogether 2,971 would-be postgraduates, including 766 Ph.D students and 2,205 Masters.

Hand Rehabilitation in Hand Surgery Research and Teaching Base Established

 

Hand Rehabilitation in Hand Surgery Research and Teaching Base was established in Huashan Hospital recently by Shanghai Research Institute for Hand Surgery of Fudan University and School of Puncture and Massage of Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine University. Prof. XIE Jianqun, Executive Vice President and Chancellor of Shanghai TCM University, Prof. FENG Xiaoyuan, Dean of School of Medicine of Fudan University and Party Secretary of Huashan Hospital, Prof. GU Yudong, Director of Shanghai Research Institute for Hand Surgery and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering participated in the opening ceremony.

 

Rehabilitation Medicine is a new discipline that further integrates TCM and western medicine, and fosters the development of hand rehabilitation medicine. The Research and Teaching Base focuses on the fields of ”rehabilitation for brachial plexus damage by integrated Chinese and western medicine” and ” the theory of rehabilitation by integrated Chinese and western medicine on the operation on upper limbs” among the others.

Renowned Baritone ZHANG Feng Invited As Faculty Member of Fudan

 

 

Mr. ZHANG Feng, renowned baritone and State Level A Actor jointed Fudan University as faculty member of the Film Art Research Center on July 5. With distinguished achievements in Opera, ZHANG has received many rewards both at home and abroad. It is believed that with ZHANG’s involvement in film studies on campus would foster the research capacity in the related fields.

 

Film Art Research Center at Fudan was established in October, 2004. Joined by a number of professors with high reputation in different art associations as Advisors, the Center has been active in teaching and research.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars Visits Fudan University

 

On the morning of July 3rd, Madame Pilar Mendiola Fernandez and Virginia Gergoff from The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars of USA visited Fudan University. Director of Foreign Affairs Office Prof. CHEN Yinzhang and leaders from School of International Relations and Public Affairs, School of Management and School of Economics cordially received the guests.

 

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is a prestigious non-profitable educational institution. Under the sponsorship of Boeing Company, the center will hold an internship program named “The U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Program” in every spring semester from 2008 to 2010. Ten college students from both USA and China will be chosen to go to Washington to attend a 15-week course and internship program to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the two nations.

 

During the meeting, Madame Pilar Mendiola Fernandez and Virginia Gergoff expressed their strong desire to welcome graduate and post-graduate students from any major to actively go in for the “U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Program”. Prof. CHEN Yinzhang expressed his appreciation, and offered help on behalf of Fudan to student selection.

Visit by Party of European Socialists Delegation

 

On 6 July 2007, a Delegation of Party of European Socialist led by Mr. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Former Prime Minister of Denmark and President of European Socialist Party, visited Fudan University and had a friendly discussion with Fudan scholars of European Studies on Sino-European relations and the others.

 

Participants from Fudan included Prof. DAI Binran, Former Director of Centre for European Studies, Prof. ZHOU Dunren, Nordic Centre Research Fellow, Prof CHEN Zhimin, Chair of International Politics Department, School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Prof. DING Chun, Executive Deputy Director of Centre for European Studies, Prof. YU Hai from School of Social Development and Public Policies, Dr. SHU Min from Centre for European Studies; Ms. Gry-Irene Skorstad, Program Manager of Nordic Centre, Nordic students who were attending a 3-week Summer Course Program organized by Nordic Centre and other interested students from across the campus. The discussion was chaired by Professor CHEN Yinzhang, Associate Vice President and Director of Foreign Affairs Office.

 

Ms. Skorstad and Prof. DING Chun introduced respectively to the delegation the Nordic Centre and the Centre for European Studies. President Rasmussen expressed great interest in the activities held by the two Centers and his pleasure to meet the Nordic and Chinese students at present. He remarked that the young generation is the hope for future and through university exchange programs mutual understanding between Nordic and Chinese students towards social, political and cultural issues can be enhanced. He also introduced the views and commitments of the Party of European Socialist to transform the world by helping immigrants integrate into European society and creating a sense of security and stability. The Party also stresses on the social elements in the global economy as well as social welfare in the context of globalization. Mr. Rasmussen indicated great possibilities of cooperation with China considering the common opinions in these aspects shared by the European Socialist Party and China Communist Party and the Chinese Government. Professors from Fudan University shared their ideas on future development of Sino-European relations, comparison between social welfare models in American and those in Nordic countries, as well as European integration process, to name a few. Both parties agreed on the concept of harmonious development.

 

The delegation’s visit ended by a meeting with President Wang Shenghong who briefed the guests on the recent development of Fudan University.

Chairman of Coca Cola China Delivers Speech on ”MasterCard Forum for Management Masters”


 

Mr. CHEN Qiwei, Chairman of Coke Cola China delivered a speech on ” the Localization of International Brand” on Fudan MasterCard Forum for Management Masters. During the speech, CHEN Qiwei shared the marketing strategy of Coca Cola, which is customer-oriented, and the localization of the brand, human resource and research. He also introduced how the company supports education, sports, charity and farmer’s life. He concluded that multi-national companies have contributed to the economical development of China by producing more jobs, taxes and outputs. Chen’s humorous and sharp answers were bravoed by audience.

 

CHEN was born in 1956, an alumnus of San Jose State University. He joined Coca Cola Pacific in 1979. Since 1993 when he began to lead Coca Cola China, the company has been growing rapidly and become a major player in China’s soft drink market.

President of Macquarie University Visits Fudan University


 

On the morning of July 12th, President of Macquarie University Prof. Schwartz, visited Fudan University. Fudan Chancellor Prof. QIN Shaode, Vice President Dr. XU Zheng and Director of Foreign Affairs Office Prof. CHEN Yinzhang received Prof. Schwartz.

 

Prof. Schwartz introduced academic curricula of Macquarie University and proposed that the two universities develop joint doctor programs. Prof. Schwartz also visited Fudan School of Management and gave a brilliant talk to students from School of Network Education.

 

Macquarie University signed a three-year agreement with Fudan University in 2006, sponsoring three Fudan PhD candidates for one-year study at Macquarie University every year. Besides, Macquarie University also has a good cooperative relationship with Fudan School of Management and sends students to Shanghai for short-term courses twice a year.

Distinguished American Sociologist Prof. Eric Olin Wright Delivers Lecture at Fudan

 

On the morning of July 26, Professor Wright, invited by Professor LIU Xin, Dean of Sociology Department in School of Social Development And Public Policy, delivered to the students and faculty of sociology a speech entitled A Socialist Alternative.

 

Eric Olin Wright, professor of Sociology Department of University of Wisconsin, United States, is an eminent Marxist sociologist and one of the leading figures in social stratification theory of neo-Marxism.

 

Professor Wright probed into the possibility and path of socialist turning of American society on the basis of criticizing capitalist system. After the lecture, he had an in-depth discussion with students and faculty at Fudan theories and cases on the issue. Students were quite eager to raise questions and Professor Wright responded in detail.

 

Professor Wright’s lecture brings us his latest research achievement. His criticism to capitalist system and review on socialism will be of significance for us to know the opinions of western Marxist Sociologist and understand some current problems in China.

Fudan President Hosts Luncheon for Princess of Jordan


 

President Prof. WANG Shenghong hosted a luncheon for Her Royal Highness Jordan Princess Raiyah to congratulate her on completing the study of short-term Chinese Language course at Fudan University with excellent achievements. Afterward, the International Culture and Exchange School held a brief graduation ceremony for Her Highness and issued her Course Certificate and Transcript on the ceremony.

 

Princess Raiyah arrived at Fudan in August, and studied Chinese language for one month with 180 international students from 10 countries and regions. In addition to language studies, Her Highness also received training in traditional Chinese culture including Chinese Taichi Boxing, Chinese Painting and Calligraphy.

SPECIAL EDITION: SUMMER PROGRAMMES

 

Introduction to Modern China – A 3-Week Summer Course organized by Nordic Centre

 

The popular three-week summer course program "Introduction to Modern China" was held for the eighth time since 1999 at Nordic Centre from July 2 to 20. Altogether 73 students from 22 of the 24 Nordic Centre member universities attended the course, which was divided into two parallel programs, specializing in "Chinese Politics and Society" and "Chinese Politics and Economy" respectively.

 

The summer course program, with a variety of lectures given by famous professors from Fudan University and other local institutions and organizations, provided an opportunity to Nordic students to familiarize themselves with vital issues in China’s history and development, as well as to gain first-hand experience of the rapidly changing contemporary Chinese society. Each course had a Nordic teacher who functioned as a culture broker, organizing weekly summing-ups and offering a few lectures throughout the course. In addition to the lectures, the program also included several study visits to various places of cultural and historical interest and foreign-owned companies in China.

 

Students were awarded with certificate at the end of the program and all the courses are creditable with a final thesis writing.

APRU Summer Programme 2007

 

This summer, Fudan University hosted APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2007 from July 16-29 for the second run, centered on the theme “A Changing China: Economic and Political Reforms in Recent Years”. Altogether 44 students from 21 APRU member universities participated in the programme. After daily 30-minutes’ survival Chinese Language course, scholars and professors gave insightful lectures, helping the students to understand Chinese reforms on politics and economy and great changes taken place in recent years. Besides the lectures, the participants also attended a variety of extracurricular activities including group seminar, field study and visits to cultural and scenery venues in and near Shanghai.

 

In 2006, Fudan University hosted the first APRU undergraduate summer programme. Based on the theme “Introduction to Modern China”, 27 member universities were attracted to send representatives to attend this program, during which they were introduced to socioeconomic, political and cultural aspects of China through lectures and field trips.

2007 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses at Fudan

 

From August 22 to September 21, 2007 Austrian China Know-How Summer Courses, jointly presented by the Foreign Affairs Office of Fudan University, Austrian Center and Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, was held at Fudan.

 

Divided into two groups, altogether eighty Austrian students spent two weeks in Shanghai, taking lectures from Fudan professors, paying visits to enterprises and going on excursions in and out of Shanghai. The purpose of hosting this summer program is to help the Austrian young people to gain a more direct and comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of contemporary China.

Fudan-UNINET EU Summer School 2007

 

From July 16 to August 6 2007, 38 students attended EU Summer School that was jointly organized by UNINET and Fudan University.

 

The aim of the program was to provide the participating students with first-hand knowledge about European culture, economy, politics, literature and arts, with a special focus on the organization and function of the European Union.

 

The summer school attendees visited Brussels in Belgium, known as the heart of Europe, as well as other famous European cities including Paris, Salzburg and Vienna, where the students attended lectures and visited sites of important historical and cultural significance.

The “American Studies 2007” Programme


 

The “American Studies 2007” jointly organized by Fudan University and the Virginia Commonwealth University was held in the United States from July 14 to August 10, 2007. This program provided over 30 hours of lectures on a wide range of topics, such as American history, politics, economics, culture, media, art, international trade and foreign policy.

 

The participants also had chances to visit Williamsburg, New York, Washington, and some other American cities of historic significance.

 

A variety of activities were planned for the program, including rowing, movies, family visits, and visits to the Busch Garden and the Virginia Beach.

 

According to the requirements of the program, all participants must complete at least five articles each week on their experience in the United States. In addition, they were also required to submit a final paper on certain aspects of the States as their research result. It is expected that “American Studies 2007” can offer the students direct experience in the States and inspire them to reflect on their experience for better understand of the society and the culture.

Fudan-at-Yale Summer Session 2007

 

Fudan University held the third summer session at Yale University in 2007 and 29 students, divided into 2 groups, attended Yale Summer Session B and Yale English Language Institute Summer Course.

 

Fudan-at-Yale summer session gives the students a great opportunity to experience American education at a prestigious institution. The summer session features a challenging curriculum and schedules time to experience campus life, which exposes students not only to international cultural identity, but also American humanity and Yale tradition. The summer session lasts for six consecutive weeks. From Monday to Friday, the students spent at least 20 hours for in-class lecture and seminar per week, with required courses in the morning and elective courses in the afternoon. The study topics include various aspects of American life, such as urban life, social class, gender study, education and religion. The coursework adopts fictional and non-fictional reading materials to help the participants acquire proficiency in approaching issues concerning politics, economics, the environment, etc.

Student Study Abroad Programme at CSUF

 

A Fudan group of 23 students participated in a Study Abroad Program at California State University Fullerton from July 16 to Aug 12. During this four-week program, Fullerton professors gave more than 20 lectures on American politics, economics, culture, media, society and international strategies. Field studies included campus tour in UCLA and USC, beach activities, visit to Disneyland, boat cruise in Los Angeles Harbor, visit to Getty Museum and American family visits among the others.

Fudan Students Attends Summer Language Programme at York University

 

16 Fudan students from different majors attended Summer Language Program offered by York University in Canada form July 30 to August 25, 2007.

 

York University is now Canada’s third largest university, world-renowned for attracting students who forge their own unique paths.

 

According to their performance in the placement test, students took classes on listening, reading, speaking and writing in English. Among the classes of 4 different levels, Fudan students were in the classes of top two levels. They were encouraged to discuss and express their ideas in English and in daily life.

 

Apart from in-class study, students enjoyed field trips to the Niagara Falls, Wonderland, Toronto Island among the others and explored ethnic neighborhoods.

 

Fudan students also enjoyed York campus very much, its well equipped sports facilities and the natural environment.

China Synergy Program

 

China Synergy Program (CSP) 2008 kicked off its Round-China tour in Hong Kong, and visited the cities of Guangzhou, Xi’an, Beijing and Shanghai in turn. The participants had the opportunity to witness the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong SAR’s returning to China, the experience Chinese culture and diversified life styles in historic cities and modern cosmopolitans in Mainland China, and to feel the pulse of economic and social development.

 

Launched in 1999, CSP is an annual event that accepts over two hundred Chinese-origin students from China and overseas and offers a one-month learning program of Chinese culture and society in summer in China. Two undergraduates from Fudan University participated in CSP 2008.

Fudan Students Joins Leadership Forum at Rikkyo University, Tokyo

 

15 Fudan Students joined a Leadership Forum at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 21 to 25. Leadership Forum 2007 focused on Sustainable Development in North East Asia and students from four universities of three countries had lectures, discussions, and presentations on the related topics under this subject.

 

Initiated by Yonsei University (Korea), Waseda University (Japan) and Rikkyo Unviersity (Japan), the Leadership Forum aimed to hold discussions on a spectrum of topics among Korean, Japanese and Chinese university students on how to foster future leadership in North East Asia. The Forum is held in turn b y each member university. Fudan University joined the Forum in 2006 and will host the next Forum in 2008.
