This is a topic that few scholars in China have ever studied. While Deng Beixi proposed "The Feasibility of Constructing A New Order in the Arctic", integrating issues including resources, continental shelf and high seas exploitation, which was highly evaluated by the experts.

Fudan Bio-medical Professor Jointed Panda Genome Project

On March 6, the “International Panda Genome Project” initiated by Chinese scientists and joined by their Canadian, British, American and Danish counterparts officially started in the city of Shenzhen. Dr. He Lin, professor from Fudan Institute of Bio-medical Sciences, and member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, joined in the project on behalf of the University.

The short term objective of the project is to accomplish panda genome mapping in six months, which is believed to exert far-reaching influence on many fields from Panda ecology to evolution with panda genome information, and thus furnish genetic and biological basis so that people can know pandas better. This project will also lend help the scientists to study panda’s special adaptability to environment and the molecular mechanism of its evolution.

Furthermore, “International Panda Genome Project” also helps with disease surveillance on this species of animal by providing scientific evidences for the propagation of panda. In addition, the project will give impetus to the development of detection technology of genome mapping by employing new detection technology.

As a rare species of animal found only in China, panda was known as “living fossil” under intensive care. According to the survey held by State Forestry Administration in 2006, the number of panda was around 1,600. However, pandas remain challenged with crises including deterioration of its fecundity and its sex gland.

With the development of detection technology of genome array, the genome mapping of paddy, eelworm, pig, dog and human being have been successfully detected. However, the genome project of panda is still a task to be fulfilled.
