In early 2006, Executive Vice President Wang Weiping once led a delegation to visit Erasmus university and its Medical Center when the two universities decided to work together to apply Asia Facilities for China 2006, a cooperation project with China sponsored by the Government of the Netherlands. In June 2006, a fund of 400,000 euros was granted by the Government, hence a cohort study for a period of two years began, which was formally known as "Towards a joint cohort research programme in the Shanghai area: human resources development and institution building" since August 1, 2006 to July 31, 2008. This was in fact a preparation for carrying out a large-scale "China’s Community Health Survey" after two years, which is a long-term cohort study on Changfeng Community in Putuo District of Shanghai, taken " Rotterdam study" as its model, in order to track and study the common chronic diseases (including metabolic disease, neurodegenerative disease, liver disease, etc.) in China’s middle-aged population. The study aimed to compensate for the lack of data in Chinese population characteristics and to develop and improve China’s common disease diagnosis and treatment strategies, and even provide the basis for policy formulation of China’s major health strategies.

The cooperation headed by Professor Gao Xin, Vice President of the Zhongshan Hospital and the Director of Endocrinology Section, organized the experts from Zhongshan Hospital, Medical College, School of Public Health, School of Life Sciences and China Clinical Epidemiology Collaborative Network (ChinaCLEN) to do a lot of research. So far, the research base and FERIM, Fudan–Erasmus Medical Research Center, was established. A substantive follow-up research pre-test was completed and a research team was trained. The two universities decided to continue to carry out a cohort study and look for the resources of funding, equipment and research fellows.

Mayor Ivo Opstelten spoke highly of the cooperation and expressed his support, hoping that the “Rotterdam Study” could contribute to the health cause of the Chinese people.
