U21 TLN launches fellowship programme
The U21 Teaching & Learning Network (TLN) has established a U21 TLN Staff Fellowship Programme to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills within the TLN and to encourage the sharing of best practice.
The programme is designed to provide support to a range of academic and staff (including Directors of Teaching and Learning and Chairs of Department Teaching Committees) to travel to and undertake research at another U21 university in another country in order to respond to the TLN’s Grand Challenges and begin to develop strategies in these areas. The focus of the visits should be on new educational methods, pedagogy and technologies. Staff will also have the opportunity to investigate and discuss administrative practices, including policy, systems and procedures in a U21 member university.

We are delighted to announce that Jonas Berg of Lund University has won the Universitas 21 photography competition entitled The International Campus. Berg fought off some stiff competition to take the first prize, with Sabrina Lee (Queensland) and Peter Morenus (Connecticut) taking the two runners-up prizes. There were also eight photos which were 'highly commended'.
"Just because a campus is abroad, doesn't make it international," commented Jane Usherwood, U21's Secretary General and competition judging panellist. "We were looking for an image which, to any casual observer, would highlight an aspect of internationalisation in the life of any U21 university. Jonas Berg's photo is both creative and thought-provoking and draws to attention the fact that with technology today anywhere can be a campus."
All the winning and highly commended photos can be viewed on the U21 website and will be exhibited at the U21 Annual Presidential Meeting in Sweden next May.

Teaching & Learning Workshop on Ethics & Citizenship
Expressions of interest are invited for the next U21 T&L Workshop, entitled Ethics and Citizenship in the Curriculum. The workshop will take place from 12 to 14 March 2012 at Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Mexico City campus. The workshop is aimed at practitioners and those interested in developing and integrating an Ethics and Citizenship programme into their own curriculum and Tecnológico de Monterrey is at the forefront of developments in this area. The workshop will be limited to around 25 participants.

International summer school opportunities
Many U21 universities run summer schools or programmes during the long holidays and opportunities for U21 students to take part in these events are beginning to open up. At the moment a limited number of summer programmes are open to students from other U21 universities, but it is hoped that more will be available in the coming months.
The University of Amsterdam and Korea University have already published details of the special opportunities open to U21 students and we hope to have information from other universities in the coming weeks – do keep an eye on the website for additional information.

Competition to design inaugural Gilbert Medal
In May 2012 Universitas 21 will award the first Gilbert Medal for excellence in internationalisation and students at Lund University, the host of the 2012 U21 Annual Presidential Meeting and venue for the award ceremony, are being given the opportunity to join in by designing the medal to be presented.
The competition is open to all students of Industrial Design and Architecture at Lund and the selection panel will be looking for a design which both captures aspects of international education and illustrates that the 2012 Medal was awarded at Lund University. All the subsequent year's designs will be based upon the inaugural medal, tailoring each to the award ceremony venue.
Nottingham and Connecticut among greenest universities in the world
The University of Nottingham has been named the greenest university in the world, according to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, which also placed the University of Connecticut in third place. Institutions are assessed on a range of metrics, including energy management, sustainability-related scholarship and the proportion of green space on campus. The National University of Singapore and the University of Amsterdam also featured in the ranking of 178 universities across the world.

The University of Nottingham has also won royal recognition in the UK for its research to help feed the world’s growing population. The university has been awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its research on Global Food Security, which includes everything from growing more crops with less fertiliser, to improving the nutrition, safety and taste of food on the plate. Professor Jerry Roberts, academic lead of the University’s Global Food Security Priority Group, said: “This award is a fitting tribute to a century of training and research in agricultural and food-related research that has been carried out on the University’s campuses.”

2010/11 Annual Review now online
The U21 2010/11 Annual Review is now online! Looking back at the period from November 2010 to October 2011, the Review gives a clear snapshot of the varied activity which has been taking place around the network over the last year and shows the breadth and depth of opportunities open to members of U21 institutions to get involved in international collaboration.
