2015 U21 Awards announced
  • Recipients are Dr Rob Forage (UNSW Australia) and Professor Stephen Hillier (University of Edinburgh)

  • Awards recognise individual efforts towards internationalisation and celebrating wide-reaching global initiatives

  • Awards to be made at U21 AGM at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in May

Fudan International Summer School faculty awards
  • Fudan University announces visiting teaching faculty for its International Summer School (FISS) and Fudan Summer Session

  • Includes eight faculty from six member universities

  • Kamil Shah (Queensland), Nicholas Foucras (ITESM), Xuelei Huang (Edinburgh) teaching at International Summer School
    Philip Habel (Glasgow), Helena Sandberg (Lund), Stephen Schensul & Jean Schensul (Connecticut), Roberto Gutierrez (ITESM) teaching at Fudan Summer Session

Teaching opportunity in Ethiopia
  • University of Connecticut offering opportunity for engineering faculty to teach at the Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources (EIWR)

  • Long-standing relationship open to U21 community for a number of years

  • Seeking visiting instructors to teach PhD level course in Fluvial Processes & River Mechanics and MSc level coureses Surface Water Hydrology and Groundwater Hydrology

  • Courses will be offered in a three week intensive format throughout 2015, scheduled to accommodate instructor’s needs

Educational Innovation
Fourth EI Position Paper published
  • EI Cluster published fourth position paper entitled Recognition of Teaching Excellence: A Discussion Paper

  • Seeks to understand the messages that research-intensive universities communicate about the importance and value of teaching, and how they define, recognise and reward teaching quality

  • Follow-up workshop in April

Second iteration of U21 SOC begins 9 March
  • The U21 Shared Online Course Critical Thinking in Global Challenges runs again, beginning 9 March 2015  

  • Opportunity for U21 undergraduates to share a learning experience around some of the global challenges today

  • Takes advantage of the global character of the network, challenging students to engage in cross-institutional, cross-cultural interactions in the context of a meaningful learning experience

Researcher Engagement
Graduate Research Conference announced
  • 6th U21 Graduate Research Conference hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 6 to 12 June

  • Theme: Digital Future, examining how the digital technology landscape has changed over the past and what that means for the years ahead

  • Member universities may nominate up to three delegates – one to present a paper, one a poster and one to do either a paper or poster

  • Nomination deadline: 15 April 2015 and should be sent to grc2015@sjtu.edu.cn

Supervisor Support & Development Workshop
  • Registration now open for U21 International Workshop on Research Supervisor Support & Development: Practices, Principles & Priorities.  

  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University on 25 and 26 March 2015

  • Will look at positioning activity, informing positive practice, and sharing views on the role of the doctorate and doctoral supervisor

  • Open to all U21 colleagues with responsibility for supervisor training and those in related fields

Call for nominations: ECR workshop 2015
  • 2015 ECR workshop on Innovation and Entrepreneurship from 4 to 6 March hosted by University College Dublin

  • Aimed at researchers from all disciplinary backgrounds

  • Key objective: to increase research capabilities of ECRs and develop skills to aid career development in academia

  • Each university may nominate seven early career researchers: three guaranteed places and four reserve

  • Nominations deadline: Friday 23 January 2015

Student Leaders’ Network registration CLOSING!
  • 2015 Student Leaders’ Network meeting will take place at National University of Singapore from 26 February to 1 March 2015  

  • Theme: Nurturing Today’s Leaders for Tomorrow’s Challenges

Deadline approaching for U21 Summer School 2015
  • Nominations for 12th U21 Summer School, this year hosted by University of Glasgow close Saturday 28 February.

  • Title: Cities & Citizen Engagement in the Digital Age, running 1 to 15 July

  • Including sections on citizen engagement, transportation, energy, big data, protecting vulnerable groups and physical regeneration and using new technologies to support and improve the vital components of a fully functional city

U21 Social Entrepreneur Corps 2015
  • Programme will run from 28 June to 26 July 2015, with pre-programme courses in the preceding weeks

  • Gives students the opportunity to volunteer in some of the poorest rural communities in Guatemala

  • Deadline for nominations is Monday 9 March 2015

Undergraduate Research Conference
  • 11th URC to be hosted by the University of Auckland, 6 to 10 July

  • Theme: Peoples & Places

  • Provides excellent opportunity for undergraduate researchers to showcase research

International Summer School opportunities
  • More Summer School opportunities made available

  • University of Nottingham has announced summer schools at its China and Malaysia campuses, with reductions in the fees for students from U21 member universities.

People & Places
New Year Honours
  • Congratulations to the seven people from within the network in the UK’s New Year Honours List.  

  • In particular to Professor Martyn Poliakoff, 2014 Gilbert Medal recipient, on being awarded a knighthood for his services to the chemical sciences

  • Also Professor Stephen Hillier, winner of a U21 Award in 2015 (see above) given an OBE for his services to international education

  • Five other professors from Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh honoured too
